Maliuc lies on the Sulina Arm in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Nearby lakes, the Taraschina archaeological site and local cultural offerings give the place a range of distinctive features. Lake Nebunu and the route towards Sulina are also part of its geographical context.
Lakes and surrounding landscape
The lakes in the municipality’s surroundings include Lake Fortuna and Lake Gorgova. Lake Fortuna covers 977.5 hectares and is one of the large lakes in the Danube Delta. Lake Gorgova is about 14 square kilometres in size, almost circular and surrounded by eight adjoining lakes. These figures make Gorgova larger than Fortuna; its shape and neighbouring lakes are additional characteristic features. Lake Fortuna, in turn, is regarded as one of the Delta’s large lakes. Lake Nebunu is also among the tourist attractions associated with the municipality of Maliuc.
Maliuc Dendrological Park was established in 1969. Its date of origin provides a more recent point of reference alongside Taraschina’s prehistoric history.
Taraschina: a settlement beneath the water
The Neo-Eneolithic settlement of Taraschina lies in the outskirts of the municipality of Maliuc. It is considered the oldest human settlement known to date in the Danube Delta and has been declared a historic monument. As a submerged Chalcolithic tell settlement in Maliuc District, Taraschina provides evidence of prehistoric landscapes that are now inundated by the waters of the Danube. The site thus connects the history of an early settlement with a landscape reshaped by water. For those interested in cultural history, Taraschina offers a different focus from the lakes: here, the prehistoric settlement and its underwater location take centre stage.
Cultural offerings in Maliuc
The local cultural event “Serbările Scrumbiei” takes place every year in Maliuc. An art exhibition and the “Maliuc” artists’ camp are also held annually. Local traditional ensembles perform in Maliuc and in the villages of the municipality. The exhibition and artists’ camp put visual arts in the foreground, while performances by traditional ensembles offer a different cultural focus and also take place in the municipality’s villages. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check the local dates in advance.
Route connections and choosing a location
Maliuc is included as a transit point on the Danube–Black Sea route towards Sulina. When choosing a place to stay, the different locations associated with these attractions are also relevant: the lakes are in the municipality’s surroundings, Taraschina lies in the outskirts, and traditional ensembles perform both in Maliuc and in the municipality’s villages. When looking for a hotel in Maliuc, you can therefore consider whether the lakeside landscape, archaeological history or a cultural event is the main draw for your trip.
