The lakes and marshes of the Danube Delta are home to more than 300 bird species and 45 freshwater fish species. This diversity gives Tulcea a special range of discoveries: the landscape and its waterways sit alongside museums, collections and historic sites. The Danube Delta in Tulcea County is considered Europe’s largest and best-preserved delta.
Nature Between the Delta and the Aquarium
The Centrul Muzeal Eco-Turistic Delta Dunării brings a museum and public aquarium together in one institution. The exhibition showcases habitats from the Danube Delta and the Razim-Sinoie lagoon complex, as well as the natural heritage of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The aquarium features 24 native fish species from the Danube Delta and the Black Sea. It also includes 23 species of reef fish, eight species of marine invertebrates and six coral species. Here, the exhibition introduces you to a variety of habitats and animal groups—from the regional delta to marine themes.
Aegyssus and Tulcea’s History
Several archaeological complexes from the Roman period at Aegyssus can be visited on Dealul Monumentului. From the 3rd century onward, Aegyssus became an important military base and was a bishop’s seat in the 6th century. The Muzeul de Istorie și Arheologie is housed in a building in Parcul Monumentul Independenței, built on the site of the ancient city. Its collection is estimated to contain more than 90,000 items. Archaeological sites and museum collections thus offer different ways to explore the history of the place.
The museum buildings also give cultural history its own character. The Muzeul de Etnografie și Artă Populară is housed in a public building constructed between 1924 and 1927, illustrating elements of Romanian national architecture. Its approximately 8,000 objects include folk art, traditional costumes, ethnography and photographic documentation. The Muzeul de Artă is located in the historic Conacul Pașei, built between 1862 and 1865. Its collections include painting, sculpture, icons, Oriental art, graphic art and decorative art. Architecture, folk art and fine art thus stand alongside one another as distinct themes.
Village Life, Festivals and Regional Cuisine
The Muzeul Satului Pescăresc din Tulcea recreates the Chilia, Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe channels as routes and displays houses typical of villages in the Danube Delta. This makes waterways and architectural styles tangible subjects for a museum visit. From May 29 to June 1, 2026, it hosted the Scrumbii de Rusalii Festival. The event featured concerts, activities for children, local cuisine, creative workshops and outdoor experiences.
An annual tradition in Tulcea is the International Folklore Festival “Peștișorul de Aur,” which brings together traditional ensembles from different countries and cultures. The 32nd edition took place from August 8 to 11, 2026. If you are planning to attend a festival on a future trip, check for updated dates and program details. Regional dishes and products are also among the recommended discoveries: these include fish roe on toasted bread, fish soup, Storceag and fresh grilled fish, as well as fish saramură with polenta and hot peppers, local wine and Dobrujan plăcintă.
Planning a Trip to the Delta
On Tulcea’s waterfront, the Ansamblul Memorial Ivan Patzaichin marks a starting point for exploring the Danube Delta; light boats set off from here into the delta. The memorial complex is considered a remarkable architectural ensemble. For further planning, Navrom Delta operates passenger services from Tulcea to Sulina, Sfântu Gheorghe and Periprava, and also offers connections to Mila 23 and Caraorman. Schedules and services may change. If you are planning a trip, check the route and the current schedule for your destination in advance.
