Maliuc Commune is located in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve on the Sulina branch. For choosing a travel destination, the commune offers several distinct points of interest: large lakes and canals, birdwatching, fishing, regional beekeeping and archaeological sites. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide which of these themes will shape your plans for the days ahead.

Lakes, Canals and Birdwatching

Lake Fortuna is one of the large lakes in the Danube Delta, covering an area of 977.5 hectares. It can be reached from Maliuc via the Crinjala Canal. Pelican colonies and other wild bird species can be observed at the lake. Lake Gorgova is also a large lake; at approximately 14 square kilometres, it is larger in area than Lake Fortuna, which covers 977.5 hectares (around 9.8 square kilometres).

The Olguța Canal is suitable for fishing for pike and perch; fishing for pike from a boat is considered a particularly easy fishing method. You should check local regulations separately before fishing. A cormorant colony on Lake Martinca is one of the main attractions in the Maliuc area; the birds are present seasonally. The choice of activity highlights a difference: wild birds can be observed at Lake Fortuna, while the Olguța Canal is suitable for fishing for pike and perch.

Waterways and Travel Planning

On the Danube–Black Sea route, Maliuc is a possible transit village on the onward journey towards Sulina.

Beekeeping in Gorgova

In the village of Gorgova, Maliuc Commune, “Stupina Gorgova” maintains 130 traditionally and stationary-kept bee colonies. The same site also includes a farm for breeding, improving and conserving the native Romanian Carpathian honeybee. Visitors can sample honey, pollen, bee bread, honeycomb and mead, also known as hydromel; arrangements may need to be made in advance. The site thus brings together different aspects of beekeeping: keeping bees, breeding, conservation and product tasting.

Archaeological Traces and Park History

The “Taraschina” archaeological site lies between the Șontea and Olguța canals, near Lake Taraschina in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The complex is dated to approximately 6,000 years ago. The Neolithic-Eneolithic settlement is designated as a historical monument and is considered the oldest known human settlement in the Danube Delta to date.

At the “Dâmbul lui Haralambie” site on the bank of the Șontea Canal, archaeological material was discovered dating from the Eneolithic, Roman era and Middle Ages. The two sites represent different periods: Taraschina stands for an early settlement, while the finds at Dâmbul span three historical eras.

The “Parcul Dendrologic Maliuc” dendrological park was established in 1969 by Dr Bruno Vladimir Zeimiankowschi. This park history adds a clearly dated, more recent historical point of reference to the archaeological traces of the past.
