Valea Călugărească combines a multi-day cycling route with winegrowing, culture and tangible traces of local history. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you are mainly planning a cycling tour or would prefer to focus on winegrowing and cultural heritage.

The Dealu Mare cycling route and its landscape

The “Traseul Cicloturistic Dealu Mare” passes through Valea Călugărească and combines cycling with local culture, culinary and oenological traditions, and the region’s natural treasures. The route is 140 kilometres long; cyclists with a moderate level of physical fitness can complete it in five days. Its length and timeframe make it a self-contained, multi-day undertaking.

The terrain along the route is partly flat and partly hilly. The vineyards of the Valea Călugărească Institute for Research and Development in Viticulture and Winemaking are also located in the Sub-Carpathian hills. They lie at elevations of 156 to 320 metres, mostly on slopes facing south, southeast or southwest. These slopes have gradients of eight to 30 per cent. This means that the winegrowing area is not just a theme of the route, but also has a specific topographic profile.

Crama 1777: cellar craftsmanship and wine storage

The “Crama 1777” Museum presents the Valea Călugărească wine cellar as a monument of medieval art, created by local woodcarvers. The cellar thus combines the history of winegrowing with craftsmanship. Inside, there is also a themed room for wine tastings. Barrels and ceramic vessels used to store wine and brandy are on display there. The vessels illustrate a practical aspect of wine and brandy production, while the carvings give the cellar its artistic character.

Wine tradition and local history

The “Paralela 45 – Ținutul vinurilor roșii” monument marks the geographic location of Valea Călugărească and its centuries-old tradition of winegrowing and winemaking. It was inaugurated in 2025 in front of the town hall and is regarded as a landmark for residents and visitors. The monument thus connects the town’s location with its long winegrowing tradition.

Barbu Matac Manor offers another historical perspective. Barbu Matac had it built between 1901 and 1903 on the former Cantacuzino estate. Wine tastings are also part of the history of Conacul Matac: Richard Nixon, Fidel Castro and Nicolae Ceaușescu were invited to them. This recorded association with these names adds a historical perspective on the manor to its architectural and winegrowing history.

Plan your stay around your interests

With 140 kilometres, five days and the stated fitness requirement, the cycling route offers specific details for planning a multi-day tour. Crama 1777, the monument and the history of Matac Manor, on the other hand, offer different points of interest for those interested in winegrowing, craftsmanship and local history. This makes it possible to choose a holiday apartment to suit the trip you are planning.
