At Mina Unirea in the Slănic Prahova salt mine, visitors currently travel by minibus to a depth of 208 metres. The mine was created by extracting 2.9 million cubic metres of salt. Here, visitors encounter an underground landscape shaped by salt mining.

Nature and landscapes in Prahova County

Prahova County lies on the southern slopes of the Southern Carpathians. Its rectangular shape and area of 4,716 square kilometres encompass mountains, hills and plains. One of its notable natural areas is Bucegi Natural Park, a protected area that is part of the Natura 2000 network.

In the Bucegi Mountains, wind and conglomerate rock have formed natural rock formations over thousands of years. These include Sfinxul and Babele, which are among Europe’s most impressive formations. Those interested in landscapes and geology will find more than a single landmark here: the natural park has ten themed trails in total, offering different perspectives on the area.

Slănic salt mine: chambers and leisure activities

Mina Unirea comprises 14 trapezoidal chambers and covers an area of about 80,000 square metres. Alongside this underground expanse, there are sports courts and a children’s play area, as well as go-karting, table tennis, billiards, air hockey and mini golf. The range extends from sports to games and leisure activities.

Slănic can be reached via national road DN1 and by minibuses departing from Ploiești Nord every 30 minutes. Check the timetable before your trip. When planning your journey, you can connect your visit to two specific points: access to Mina Unirea and the leisure activities underground.

Royal residences and music history in Sinaia

The royal residences of Sinaia comprise Peleș, Pelișor and Foișor, set in landscaped grounds surrounded by old forests and mountain cliffs. Peleș was built at the initiative of King Carol I as a summer residence. The castle served political, cultural and symbolic functions; in 1953, it became a national museum and opened to the general public. This history makes Peleș interesting both as a building and as a place that played a role in public and cultural life.

Music history is also part of Sinaia. George Enescu had Vila Luminiș built to his own designs between 1923 and 1926. The Casa Memorială George Enescu has been a department of the George Enescu National Museum since 2007. Two rooms display documentary materials about the musician’s life and work.

Museums and historic sites

Sinaia City Museum is housed in Palatul Florescu-Știrbei, built in 1875. The museum has been open to the general public since December 18, 2017. Check the current visiting arrangements before your trip. This lets you plan your museum visit around the specific visiting conditions while keeping the building’s historic setting in view.

The Museum of Sinaia Monastery opened for public visits in 1895; you should check the current access arrangements separately. Its collection includes the Bucharest Bible of 1688 and five icons by Pârvu Mutu dating from around 1693. The icons date from a different historical period than the Bible, bringing the range of dates represented by the objects on display into focus.

Another testament to early history lies near Drajna de Sus: the Roman fort is located on Grădiștea Hill, between the valleys of the Ogretin and the Drajna. It was built during the First Dacian War, in AD 101 and 102. In Vălenii de Munte, meanwhile, many Romanian and foreign figures from science and culture visited Nicolae Iorga’s home, where Iorga founded several cultural institutions.

Another regional highlight

Alongside its natural and cultural history, Prahova also has a connection to wine tourism: in April 2026, Gura Vadului was officially introduced as Romania’s first enotourism destination, or enotourism station. Together with the varied landscapes, the salt mine and the historic sites, this offers a selection of different themes around which to plan your discoveries in Prahova County.
