Castle history and mountain sports are two distinct focal points in Sinaia: Peleș, Pelișor and the monastery tell the story of the area, while skiing and biking are also part of its local identity. If you’re looking for a hotel in Sinaia, it helps to decide in advance whether culture, ski slopes or trails will shape your stay. The following features offer some specific pointers.

Castles, music and local history

Peleș Castle was built between 1873 and 1914 and served as a royal residence from 1883 to 1947. It reopened as a museum in 1990. Pelișor was built between 1899 and 1902 as a gift for the crown princes. Its interior reflects the Art Nouveau style chosen by Queen Maria; the castle opened to visitors in February 1993. Comparing the timelines, the two castles’ construction phases spanned different periods.

George Enescu’s house also links its construction history to the composer: it was built between 1923 and 1926 and named Vila Luminiș. It became a memorial house in 1995 and has been a department of the National George Enescu Museum since 2007. Enescu’s Ibach piano, made in Lausanne, is kept there. The Muzeul Sinaia is housed in Palatul Florescu-Știrbei, built in 1875 and considered the city’s oldest villa. Its themes range from local history to notable figures, sports, scouting and nature; it also hosts temporary exhibitions.

The city of Sinaia grew up around the monastery founded in 1695. Its old church is built in the Brâncovenesc style, typical of Wallachia at the time. The monastery’s religious museum has operated continuously since it was established and is considered the first museum of its kind in Romania. Among the objects on display is the Bucharest Bible from 1688. Dimitrie Ghica Park offers another perspective on the city’s history: the park was laid out in 1881, and Sinaia Casino was built in its northern part between 1912 and 1913. The Festivalul orașului Sinaia takes place in the park every autumn. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the exact dates.

Ski slopes, gondolas and bike trails

The Sinaia ski area reaches an elevation of 2,103 metres at Vârful Furnica and is considered Romania’s highest ski area. It stretches from Cota 2000 to Cota 1000 and also includes Valea Soarelui and Valea Dorului. One specific example of a ski run is Drumul de Vară: this intermediate run goes from Cota 2000 to Cota 1400, is more than 3 kilometres long and descends 600 metres. Two lifts also serve seven runs for beginners and intermediate skiers. As operations and route information can change, it’s a good idea to check the operator’s latest information before your trip.

The Gondola Sinaia runs from Cota 1000 to Cota 1400 through a forested area. The Gondola Carp runs from Cota 1400 to Cota 2000 through alpine terrain, crossing Valea cu Brazi. If you’re interested in the Bike Resort Sinaia rather than ski slopes, you’ll find four established downhill, all-mountain and XC routes there, with a total of around 10 kilometres of singletrack and forest paths. The trails are signposted, and difficult sections can be avoided using bypass routes. It’s also worth checking the operator’s latest information on these activities in advance.

Landscape and getting around

The surrounding landscape includes Poiana Stânii, an alpine meadow at an elevation of 1,270 metres. According to local tradition, Stânca Sfânta Ana served as a retreat for local hermits. A clearing at the foot of the rock formation offers a view of Sinaia. These places add a landscape perspective to the city, distinct from its historic buildings and sporting activities.

For directions to the lower gondola station: it is located at Aleea Telegondolei No. 5, is accessible by public transport and car, and has its own car park. Bus route T4 connects Gara and Telegondola in Sinaia, stopping along the way at the Market DN1 stop. As timetables may change, check the connection for your travel date.
