Suzana Monastery combines a layered monastic history with its location by the Teleajen River and two marked hiking trails with different durations. This brings cultural history and outdoor activity together when planning your trip: the building phases and religious art form one focus, while the routes over Muntele Clăbucetul Măneciului and to Vârful Bobu Mare form the other. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, you can first consider whether the monastery’s history or a hike will take up more of your time. The route durations provide a concrete framework for planning.

By the Teleajen, between the valley and the ridge

Suzana Monastery lies in the valley of the Teleajen River, on a ridge at the foot of Mount Bobu. In front of the monastery, the Stancea and Iepurasul streams join to form the Teleajen. The location therefore brings together three geographical features: a river valley, a ridge and the foot of a mountain. The names of the waterways also describe a sequence: the Stancea and Iepurasul join in front of the monastery, and their combined waters continue as the Teleajen. This makes it possible to distinguish the location details from the waterways mentioned.

The monastery’s building history

The building history begins around 1740, when the nun Suzana built the first church from wooden beams and dedicated it to Saint Hierarch Nicholas. The present church, by contrast, is a masonry building dating from 1882. The two dates represent different building phases; the first wooden church should not be confused with the present church building. Mânăstirea Suzana also includes a chapel built in 1911. Its dedication is Acoperământul Maicii Domnului. Suzana Monastery is a historic monument.

The chapel and religious art

The chapel’s fresco was painted by Eremia Profeta. The religious art collection includes wooden icons as well as glass icons from the regions of Nicula, Făgăraș and Olt. The regional associations apply to the glass icons; wooden icons are a separate, distinct group of works. Alongside the building chronology, the religious art can thus be described in terms of fresco, material and regional origin.

Two hiking trails, two time frames

The hiking trails differ in their markings, routes and durations. The Măneciu–Muntele Clăbucetul Măneciului–Mânăstirea Suzana route is marked with blue dots and takes 5 to 6 hours. The Mânăstirea Suzana–Stanca–Muntele Bobu Mare–Vârful Bobu Mare route has red cross markings and takes 2 to 3 hours. One therefore offers a longer time frame than the other; the routes and markings also differ. Check the current trail conditions locally before setting out, and include the respective duration in your day’s plans.

Plan your journey

Possible travel connections include a train between Ploieşti and Măneciu and a bus from Măneciu to Suzana. Check the current timetables for your travel date before setting off. If you are combining the journey with a day of hiking, make sure your arrival time fits the planned time frame.
