The commune of Măgurele lies between the Ploiești Plain and the Subcarpathian hills. The Teleajen crosses its territory and forms the commune's western boundary. For travelers looking for a hotel in Măgurele, the area offers a clear cultural focus: two churches with distinct historical layers, a monument to the fallen, and the memory of the archaeological treasure of Coada Malului. At the same time, its tourist setting extends beyond the commune.

Landscape and regional setting

The low Măgurele Terrace runs along the left bank of the Teleajen and also includes the commune. The river and the terrace describe different geographic scales: the Teleajen crosses the area and forms its western boundary, while the terrace situates it on the left bank. Together with the transition from the Ploiești Plain to the Subcarpathian hills, they provide a clear landscape setting for the area.

Măgurele is situated at the intersection of three tourist areas: these include the spa resort of Cheia, with the route through the Teleajen Valley, the Prahova Valley with the mountain resorts of Sinaia, Bușteni and Predeal, and the therapeutic climate resort of Slănic. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing Măgurele's historic sites from the broader regional setting. If you include other destinations, plan the connections for each one specifically.

Two churches, different stories

In the upper part of Măgurele stands the “Sfânta Treime” church, built in 1780 in a simple architectural style associated with folk art. Its history includes several clearly dated construction and preservation phases: major repairs were carried out in 1830 and again from 1904 to 1906, funded by the villagers. The bell tower was built between 1925 and 1927. Then, from 1935 to 1936, Gr. Constantinescu, a painter from the commune of Gornet, renewed all the church's interior painting. Thus, alongside the original architecture, community-funded repairs and the later renewal of the paintings represent different chapters in the church's history.

“Adormirea Maicii Domnului,” considered the oldest church in the village, is in the lower part of the area. It lies between the foothills of Măgurele Hill and the Teleajen River. Excavations around the church revealed that a considerably older church had previously stood on the existing foundations. The two churches therefore point to different historical layers: for “Sfânta Treime,” a sequence of construction, repairs and renewal is documented; for “Adormirea Maicii Domnului,” the history of the site goes back even further.

Archaeological traces and local memory

The Coada Malului treasure is a collection of jewelry and clothing accessories dating from the middle of the 1st century BC; it was discovered in 1932. The find is also represented on the commune's coat of arms: three gold fibulae depict the goddess Bendis and symbolize the treasure. It is also included in the National History Museum of Romania's permanent exhibition, “Tezaur Istoric.”

Another chapter in the culture of remembrance is told by the monument to the heroes of Măgurele. Erected in 1937 in front of the local school, it commemorates those who fell in the War of Independence and the First and Second World Wars. Marble plaques bearing the names of the fallen are mounted on all four sides of the monument. The archaeological find and the monument emphasize different things: one recalls a treasure from antiquity, the other commemorates people who died in several wars.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

Regional transport links are also useful for getting your bearings: National Road DN 1A between Ploiești and Brașov crosses the commune. Railway line M 304 also passes through Măgurele and connects Ploiești with the settlements in the Teleajen Valley; its terminus is Măneciu. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable before your trip.

During your stay in Măgurele, focus on the churches and historical traces, and plan connections to destinations outside the commune individually.
