Sighișoara offers opportunities to explore cultural history and nature: the town is home to historic buildings and the History Museum, while a nature reserve lies nearby. For your travel plans, this means you can focus on the town’s history or also set aside time for the landscape and cycling.

Buildings and Town History

The historic town centre was added to the World Heritage List in 1999. One prominent building is the Turnul cu Ceas, a historic and architectural monument in Sighișoara. It is the most massive of the citadel’s nine surviving fortified towers. The Sighișoara History Museum is also housed in the Turnul cu Ceas; it opened on 24 June 1899. This brings fortification architecture and town history together in a tangible way at one location.

Another historic structure is the Scara Acoperită. It was built in 1642 and has 175 steps. Biserica din Deal has a special feature: it contains the only known crypt in Transylvania. For tourist visits, the church is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. Check the opening hours before your trip so you can include a visit in your plans.

Nature and Cycling Nearby

The Breite Secular Oak Nature Reserve lies near Sighișoara and covers 133 hectares. You can explore the reserve on foot or by bike. Access is free, provided you follow the rules. You can reach it via the DN14 Sighișoara–Mediaș road or from the southwestern end of Strada Ana Ipătescu via the Via Transilvanica. Check local access conditions before your visit.

For cyclists, information on two routes offers different kinds of guidance: the ADEPT Cycling Path is 100 kilometres long and connects the Saxon villages around Sighișoara. The Sighișoara–Richiș cycling route starts in Sighișoara in the Rezervația Breite area, more precisely between houses No. 56 and 58 on Strada Ana Ipătescu. There are two information boards there. One route focuses on its length and the villages it connects; the other has a precisely specified starting area. This lets you choose between a longer route and one with a clearly identified starting point.

Summer Festival

Since 1992, the Sighișoara Medieval Festival has brought the past to life each summer in the Sighișoara Fortress. The festival features medieval costumes and period stage sets, as well as theatre, dance and music. This adds a seasonal cultural highlight to your stay, distinct from exploring the buildings that can be seen year-round. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.

Whether you are mainly interested in the fortified towers, church architecture, the museum, the nature reserve or the cycling routes, Sighișoara offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip. The historic buildings and museum offer an introduction to the town’s history; the nearby Breite Reserve and the cycling routes described here complement them with experiences of nature and the landscape.
