The fortified old town of Sighișoara and the protected forests of the Upper Mureș Valley offer two different perspectives on Mureș: one is an outstanding testament to Transylvanian Saxon culture, the other is home to bird, plant and animal species in coniferous and deciduous forests. Art Nouveau, museum collections and the formation of a salt lake add further distinctive features.

Sighișoara: Urban form and cultural history

The historic centre of Sighișoara is an outstanding testament to Transylvanian Saxon culture. It is also considered an example of a small fortified town in the cultural border region between Latin-influenced Central Europe and Byzantine Orthodox-influenced Southeastern Europe. This connection makes the town particularly interesting: its urban form is not an isolated feature, but part of a broader cultural context.

The citadel’s historic townscape includes towers, cobbled streets, old houses and a Gothic church. A covered wooden staircase with 172 steps is a striking architectural detail. The Clock Tower offers a different sense of scale: it is 65 metres high, has five levels and an open gallery. Anyone interested in architecture will find specific forms and measurements here, rather than mere style labels—from the staircase to the tower’s structure.

Art Nouveau and museums in Târgu Mureș

Built between 1911 and 1913, the Palace of Culture is part of the Art Nouveau ensemble in the city centre of Târgu Mureș. Its interior and exterior decoration includes Secession stained-glass windows, Zsolnay tiles and mosaics, as well as stone and stucco ornamentation, frescoes and gilded paintings. The different materials and techniques give the architecture several layers: the decorative details are as much a part of its character as the design of the building itself.

Visitors can see the foyer and staircase, the Hall of Mirrors, and the Small and Great Halls in the Palace of Culture. The offerings also include the Gallery of Hungarian Classical Art, the Gallery of Romanian Modern Art and commemorative exhibitions. Galleries may occasionally be closed for conservation work or temporarily unavailable. A lift helps people with walking difficulties or reduced mobility reach the upper floors; its use depends on operational availability. If particular galleries or access to the upper floors are important to you, check these conditions before your visit.

The Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art is housed in the 18th-century Toldalagi Palace. Its collections include traditional costumes and household textiles, objects made of wood, ceramic, metal and bone, as well as religious objects. There are also icons on wood and glass, along with contemporary works. Different materials and forms of expression sit side by side in the same museum, offering a view that ranges from everyday objects to religious art.

Castle history and landscapes

Teleki Castle in Gorneşti was built between 1771 and 1778 in the Grassalkovich style, on the site of a former medieval fortress. Its architecture can be described using several clear details: the castle has 52 rooms and 365 windows, its floor plan is U-shaped, and a central dome rises above the reception hall. The castle’s construction and the former fortress on the same site belong to different chapters of history.

The Upper Mureș Valley protected area lies in the northeast of Mureș County and encompasses the administrative territories of Stânceni, Lunca Bradului, Răstolița and Deda. The Upper Mureș Valley Nature Park protects bird, plant and animal species in diverse coniferous and deciduous forests. Hiking, cycling and rafting are suitable activities there; rafting is especially well suited to spring. Nature watching and outdoor activity thus complement architectural discoveries, without requiring you to choose just one way to travel.

In Sovata, Lacul Ursu is considered the world’s largest heliothermal salt lake. It formed between 1875 and 1880: first, a salt massif gradually dissolved, followed by ground collapses. This sequence makes the lake’s geological history particularly easy to understand. When looking for a hotel in Mureș, you can choose your focus according to the discoveries you want to shape your trip: fortified town history, Art Nouveau and collections, nature activities or the formation of a salt lake.
