The Niraj crosses the municipality of Eremitu. It lies in the upper reaches of the stream, on the southwestern side of the Gurghiu Mountains and at the foot of Becheci; the municipality is situated at an altitude of 560 metres. The river, the edge of the mountains, and Roman and religious building history offer different points of interest. For getting there, county road 153A is a useful landmark: the municipality can be reached via this road.

Roman Heritage in Călugăreni

In Călugăreni, the Roman road Drumul lui Traian ran from the Nirajul Mare to the fort. Its paved roadway was approximately five metres wide. The Roman archaeological site formed part of the extensive defensive system of the Roman Empire, the Limes. One of the most significant surviving monuments is a stone fort. The road, fort and Limes place the individual finds in a broader context: both the Roman fortification and its integration into an extensive defensive system are central here.

The Archaeological Park was established in 2015. Visitor attractions include the Busola viewpoint. The TIME BOX exhibition pavilions present aspects of Roman civilian and military life and provide information about the archaeological excavations on site. If the exhibition is part of your plans, check the current opening hours before your visit. This will help you align your archaeological interests with the actual visitor options.

Monastery, Church and Historical Layers

The Franciscan monastery and Franciscan church in Călugăreni are among the significant religious architectural monuments in the Niraj Valley. The present monastery building dates approximately to 1634. From 1669, it housed a grammar school for more than a century. The building’s history and the history of education come together here: the monastery is also interesting for its long use as a school.

In Eremitu, the cross of the Roman Catholic church was erected between 1808 and 1812. It may have been created in the 14th century. Thus, a known period when it was erected stands alongside a possible, much earlier date of creation. Those who appreciate historic buildings and their different historical layers will find the history of the monastery and church a distinct point of interest alongside the Roman heritage.

Forests, Hiking and Traces of Fortifications

Visitors can hike through the surrounding forests to Lacul cu Arini. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Traces and ruins of Cetatea lui Vityál, which may have been one of the fortifications in the area, can also be found in the forests. According to archaeologists, the fortification was built in the Middle Ages on the foundations of a Bronze Age fortification. Its identification should therefore be treated with caution, while the interpretation of its building history links two widely separated eras.

Planning Events and Your Stay

Events can also shape your stay. The R-Festival – Roman, Renaissance, Rural – is held annually in Călugăreni. Teatrul Șură has been held there every year since 2002; music and dance are regularly part of the programme. The Parada baloanelor cu aer cald, a hot-air balloon parade, is also held annually in the municipality of Eremitu. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates before booking.

For planning, it helps to decide on your main interest first: archaeology in Călugăreni, the history of the monastery and church, a hike to Lacul cu Arini, or an event date.
