Burgfeld, known in Romanian as Câmpu Cetăţii, combines forest hikes with archaeological history, fresh trout dishes and a seasonal train ride. When planning your trip, the mix you want is particularly important: nature destinations, historic sites and model landscapes each offer a different focus. You can choose what to explore based on the themes that interest you most during your trip.
Hiking and route connections
The Terra Siculorum section of the Via Transilvanica begins in Câmpu Cetăţii and crosses the Sovata–Praid Depression. Across the wider Terra Siculorum section, the landscape is shaped by rolling hills, flowering meadows, dense forests and grazing land. This regional route perspective complements the specific hiking destinations around the town.
From Câmpu Cetăţii, hikes through the surrounding forests can lead to Lacul cu Arini, Vityál Fortress or Piatra Likaskő. These three destinations give hikes a specific direction; the Via Transilvanica section places Câmpu Cetăţii on a wider route through the depression. This means individual hiking destinations and the broader route can be considered as different ways to plan your trip.
Two archaeological periods
Aşezarea Latene de la Câmpu Cetăţii - Cetate lies on a hillock to the north, at the confluence of the Nirajul Mare and Nirajul Mic. As a Geto-Dacian settlement of the La Tène period, it dates from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The enclosing wall forms an oval ring about 15 metres below the summit. The site may have had two settlement phases: a Dacian one and an early medieval one.
South of Câmpu Cetăţii, in the forest on the summit of Dealul Săcădat, lies Turnul de epocă romană de la Câmpu Cetăţii - Cetatea Săcădat, between the Niraj Valley and the Săcădat Valley. The fortification dates from the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD and was part of the eastern line of the Roman limes in Dacia. Its ground plan is approximately rectangular. The fortification works include an earthen rampart measuring 27.5 × 26.5 metres, with a rounded corner, and V-shaped defensive ditches. The settlement and the Roman fortification therefore represent different historical periods; an additional early medieval phase at the settlement remains explicitly possible, but uncertain.
Models of the Niraj Valley
At the Mini Niraj visitor centre, a model shows the entire Niraj Valley. As of 23 April 2026, the Mini-Nyárád model complex comprises 81 buildings; its model railway has seven trains. The models range from a view of the entire valley to the buildings and trains of a model complex.
Trout and a seasonal train ride
The trout farm in Câmpu Cetăţii was established around the 1930s. The town has long been known for fresh trout dishes. The historical period when the farm was founded and the local association with trout dishes give the culinary side of the town its own place alongside hiking and history.
The railway section between Sovata and Câmpu Cetăţii was restored in 2011 and is used for tourism. During the summer season, tourists can travel 14 kilometres to Câmpu Cetăţii on the Mocănița. If you plan to take the train, check the seasonal operating days and timetable in advance.
