Vadu Izei combines specific natural features with a diverse craft and architectural culture. The commune is located in northern Romania, in the Maramureș Depression of Maramureș County, at the confluence of the Iza and Mara rivers. This offers several focal points for planning a trip: protected landscapes, geological features, historic wooden buildings and traditional crafts.

River Landscape and Geological Reserve

The Iza River, part of its terraces and the Maramureș Hills in Vadu Izei are part of the Valea Izei–Dealul Solovan Natura 2000 site (RO SCI 0264). The Ursoi geological reserve offers a different focus: it protects volcanic tuff concretions that formed around a plant core. Ursoi is classified as an IUCN Category III protected area.

The natural features therefore have different focuses: the Natura 2000 site encompasses several interconnected landscape elements, while Ursoi features a distinctive geological formation. Nature enthusiasts can keep these two aspects in mind when choosing their excursions.

Wooden Houses, Gates and Historic Traces

The Casa Muzeu “Vasile Kazar” is a traditional 18th-century wooden house and a historic monument of national importance in Vadu Izei. The village also has old wooden houses and old wooden gates. Together, these structures point to different forms of traditional wooden architecture.

Another historic trace can be found on Osoi Hill: a small stone wall served as a shelter from which to monitor the roads. The house, gates and wall thus represent different themes—from traditional housebuilding and gate design to the former function of a structure on the hill.

Crafts and Traditional Activities

Borlean Ioan is associated with making reverse-glass icons in Vadu Izei, while Bledea Liviu is associated with carving traditional gates. Moldovan Maria is linked to making Cergi, and Borlean Ileana to rugs made from plant materials. The work thus ranges from icons and woodcarving to Cergi and rugs made from plant material.

One opportunity to observe traditional activities is at the grounds of Pensiunea La Moară la Niculai: tourists can watch work at a Vâltoare, at boilers for Ţuică, and at a fulling mill and a water mill. As operating details may change, check what can currently be observed before your visit.

Cycling Route and Getting Around

A cycling route runs between Oncești, Vadu Izei and Valea Stejarului. It adds a dedicated cycling option to the natural and cultural attractions. Check local route conditions before making plans based on it.

There is also a specific road connection to note: county road DJ 186 connects Vadu Izei with Săcel. This can help you decide whether the village’s attractions suit your planned stay.
