Seini lies on the eastern edge of the Someș Plain, where it meets the western foothills of the Gutâi Mountains. Local cultural heritage ranges from a living tree monument on Dealul Comja to churches and a medieval fortress. The landscape, places of remembrance and architectural history offer several distinct ways to explore the area.

Landscape and Tree Monument

On Dealul Comja, about 10,000 fir trees spell out the name Eminescu. This tree formation was created in 1939 and is a living monument. Replanting and rehabilitation work has been carried out there. Remembrance takes a living form here: unlike churches and fortress ruins, the monument consists of a formation of fir trees.

Fortress and Architectural History

The medieval fortress of Seini is located on Dealul Cetății, northeast of the town. Its ruins are surrounded by trenches; the site also includes a wooden observation tower, tables and benches. The Roman Catholic church is considered the oldest church in the town and dates from 1421. The Reformed, also known as Calvinist, church was built in 1796. In front of it stands an obelisk commemorating Erdusy Syilvester Janos.

The Church of Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril was built between 1879 and 1882 by priest Alexiu Berinde. In the early 1940s, his son modernized the building. The church houses the only stone iconostasis in a Romanian church. The wooden church is also part of the local heritage: it was built by craftsmen from the historic region of Maramureș.

Casa Bay was built toward the end of the 19th century and is a historic monument. The Jewish synagogue was built in 1904 and is no longer in use. Together with the dated church buildings, these sites illustrate different chapters in Seini’s architectural history, from the town’s oldest church to buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Festivals and Multi-Day Routes

The traditional Zilele oraşului Seini town festival lasts two days. Its programme includes various cultural events, the celebration of Nunților de Aur, folk performances, sports competitions and open-air concerts. A recurring two-day international off-road competition takes place at the beginning of May in the Carierei Seini area and on wooded hills. Check the specific dates of both events before travelling.

The Drumul Maramureșului includes the Seini–Țara Codrului route, listed as 170 kilometres long and taking nine days. It is a standalone multi-day undertaking, not simply another local activity. Check the conditions for each stage before travelling.

Getting There and Getting Around

CFR Main Line 400 passes through Seini on the Brașov–Deda–Dej–Baia Mare–Satu Mare route. Check the timetables before travelling by train. Seini also has about six kilometres of urban cycling paths and a bike-sharing system with four fixed rental stations. Before planning to use bike-sharing, check that the service is operating.

The specific planning questions depend on your plans: event dates matter if you are visiting for a festival, timetables for planning a train journey, and current operating status for using bike-sharing. The nine-day duration, in turn, refers to the Seini–Țara Codrului route and involves a different time commitment from the two-day town festival.
