You can plan a stay in Săpânța from three different perspectives: cultural heritage, monastic history and nature. These themes come into particularly clear focus at the Merry Cemetery, Săpânța-Peri Monastery and Șipot Waterfall.
The Merry Cemetery and its artistic heritage
The Merry Cemetery was the life's work of sculptor, painter and folk poet Ion Stan Pătraș; his students continued the artistic work. The carved epitaphs provide information about people, professions and activities, as well as village life, traditions and customs. In this way, the focus broadens from the people depicted to the aspects of life recorded in the inscriptions.
Dumitru Pop (Tincu) also draws on the original decorative forms and distinctive color scheme introduced by Stan Ion Pătraș at the Merry Cemetery, reinterpreting them. The Casa Memorială „Stan Ioan Pătraș“ offers a different perspective: the property includes the artist's house, a stable and the workshop in the courtyard. Inside, you can see traditional furniture, household textiles and a significant collection of objects made by Stan Ioan Pătraș himself. While the epitaphs depict village life and its people, this house focuses more closely on the artist and his own work.
Săpânța-Peri Monastery
Today's Săpânța-Peri Monastery was founded in 1997 in the immediate vicinity of Săpânța; construction took place from 1998 to 2003 near the Tisa River. The church tower rises 75 meters above the ground. Alongside this more recent building history is the story of the former monastery, which was destroyed in 1703. It was rebuilt toward the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, near its original site, which is now in Ukraine. The monastery's history therefore extends beyond the construction of the present-day monastery.
Șipot Waterfall and route planning
Below the waterfall, the erosion caused by the falling water has created a large plunge pool. A tourist route description published in 2014 leads from Cariera Capul Feței through the Nadoșa Valley to Șipot Waterfall. It gives the route's length as approximately 5 to 6 kilometers and the walking time as around 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours each way. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Șipot Waterfall is also accessible by off-road vehicle. There is a parking area directly above it; from there, you can walk down to the area above the waterfall. It can be slippery in wet conditions. For planning your visit, the described walking route with its approximate travel time and access by off-road vehicle are two different options.
