Săcălaşeni lies on the left bank of the Lăpuș. A distinctive church tradition and the riverside landscape offer different focal points for a stay: the wooden Church of the Dormition, the Hram celebrated each year and the Heroes’ Monument provide tangible points of interest for those interested in culture. There are recreational areas along the banks of the Lăpuș, and sport fishing is possible near Săcălaşeni. A church feast held on a fixed date and the riverbank as a focus for a stay thus complement one another.

The wooden church and traces of history

The wooden Church of the Dormition is a historic monument dating from the 17th century. Inside are wall paintings from 1865, which are in an advanced state of deterioration. Their condition may change, so check it before planning a visit. The building and the paintings belong to different periods: the monument’s date and the year the wall paintings were created can be considered separately. The church therefore offers a tangible point of reference for travellers interested in the history of religious architecture and interior decoration.

Hram: an annual occasion

Every year on 15 August, the wooden church’s Hram is celebrated with prayer and singing. The tradition includes circling the church three times, accompanied by the ringing of bells and songs in honour of the Mother of God. The fixed date provides a clear point of reference in time for the church feast. The programme for the eve of the 2026 Hram also included a Great Vespers with Litia and the Lamentations of the Mother of God, followed by a procession around the church. These details refer to the 2026 programme and add a specific annual schedule to the feast day described as taking place each year.

Commemoration and liturgical collection

The Heroes’ Monument in Săcălaşeni honours those who fell in the two world wars. The parish library houses a wooden chalice dated to 1442 and several important liturgical books. The two places represent different historical references: the monument commemorates the world wars, while the library preserves liturgical objects and books. Cultural interest thus extends beyond the history of the church building.

The Lăpuș, getting there and finding your way

The route through Cătălina and Săcălaşeni includes recreational areas along the banks of the Lăpuș. Sport fishing is also possible near Săcălaşeni. While the Hram takes place on a fixed date each year, be sure to check the rules and seasonal conditions for sport fishing separately. This makes it possible to plan a riverside visit differently from a trip centred on the church feast.

The route approaches from the south side of Baia Mare, passing through Satu Nou de Jos and Cătălina to Săcălaşeni. Check road conditions before setting out. The Săcălaşeni Tourist Information and Promotion Centre provides visitors with information about nearby tourist areas and destinations throughout Romania.
