The Someș floodplain and several points of historical interest shape Mânău. If you are looking for a holiday rental in the village, you can first consider whether cultural history or landscape and fishing should be the main focus of your trip. The village’s location, the manor house, archaeological traces and a presentation of historical traditional dress offer different points of interest.
Location and orientation
The modernised DJ 182B road runs through Mânău from east to west. This gives the village a clear route for orientation. Its location in the Someș floodplain describes another aspect: it places Mânău within a river landscape. The road’s course and the floodplain setting complement one another without conveying the same information about the village.
Fishing is also an activity in Mânău. This provides a distinct nature-related point of interest alongside the historical themes when planning a trip. If you are weighing up different interests, you can consider the landscape and fishing separately from the archaeological and cultural-historical themes.
The manor house and traces of the past
The manor house in Mânău is 400 years old. The site of the church that once belonged to the manor house was rediscovered on its grounds. The manor house and the church site thus point to two connected but distinct aspects of the village’s history: a historic building and the former church on its grounds.
Another point of interest is Străjerul Hill, also known as Vidiazău. Roman-period elements have been documented there. The hill therefore brings a different historical period into the picture than the manor house.
A hoard of more than 23,000 coins from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries was also discovered in Mânău. The dates place different subjects in context: Roman elements on the hill, coins from three centuries and the manor house, described as 400 years old. To understand the village’s history, it is worth reading these details as separate points of reference rather than combining them into a single period.
Community and traditional clothing
Historically, Mânău is one of the villages in Maramureș that has preserved a significant Hungarian community. The history of this community is therefore another cultural subject in the village, alongside its buildings and archaeological traces.
In 2015, a traditional costume typical of Mânău was presented. It included a black headscarf, a handmade blouse decorated with flowers and lace, a waistcoat embroidered with gold thread, and a handmade skirt with lace. The apron was sewn with gold thread and embroidered with black lace.
The traditional costume adds another cultural dimension to the history of buildings and finds: traditional clothing and its craftsmanship. Together with the historical information about the Hungarian community, it offers a perspective on Mânău that differs from the archaeological traces of the past.
