Oncești offers several ways to explore the cultural history of Maramureș: the “Maramureșul Istoric: Cetatea Oncești” route begins in the village and leads to archaeological remains. The wooden church from Oncești has its own history, linked to Sighetu Marmației. There is also a festival tradition and local handicrafts. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between archaeological traces, woodcraft and cultural traditions.

The route to Cetatea Oncești

The “Maramureșul Istoric: Cetatea Oncești” route starts in Oncești and leads to Cetatea Oncești. The site includes both Dacian and medieval remains. Those interested in archaeology will find traces from different periods at a named destination on the route.

Visible medieval remains include the remains of a tower with a square ground plan and a sandstone wall. A grotto is associated with the extraction of the sandstone. The description of the Cetatea thus connects specific architectural features with its archaeological context. A Borcut spring is about 30 minutes from the starting point of the Oncești route; this time is approximate.

Woodcraft and the church’s history

The wooden church from Oncești is one of the oldest wooden churches in Maramureș. It preserves an interlocking wooden structure on two levels. Its distinctive features include an imperial door, a deacon’s door and very small windows. These features give woodcraft a tangible form: the structure, the two doors and the small openings can be considered as different aspects of the church.

The church’s journey is also part of its history: in 1974, it was moved to the Muzeul Satului Maramureșean in Sighetu Marmației, where it was restored in 1975. The wooden church from Oncești is therefore distinct from the route to the Cetatea; it offers its own way to explore the cultural heritage of the village.

Festival tradition and local handicrafts

A 2018 report described the “jocu' satului” as a tradition held annually in Oncești on the second day of Easter. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates for the year you plan to travel.

An article dated August 11, 2024, introduced Maria Godja, a folk craftswoman from Oncești who makes traditional Moroșeni garments. These include cojoace, chităre, cămeși, trăistuțe and brâie. The examples illustrate another facet of the cultural heritage: alongside archaeological remains and historic woodcraft, the making of traditional garments is a distinct reason to take an interest in Oncești’s culture.

Getting there and finding your way

Ways to reach the Oncești route include the bus, an intercity minibus from Baia Mare in the direction of Valea Izei–Bârsana–Borșa, or your own car. If you travel by bus or minibus, check the timetable before departure. This lets you adapt your journey to your plans without assuming an unverified travel time or fixed itinerary for the route.

The Cetatea Oncești, the wooden church from Oncești, the “jocu' satului” and Maria Godja’s handicrafts are different points of interest for a stay. Which one takes center stage depends on whether you are most interested in archaeological traces, the history of woodcraft or traditional culture.
