Leordina brings together distinctive natural features and a layered cultural history. The commune has natural meadows and beech vegetation at elevations of 500 to 600 m, as well as churches, memorial sites and traditional customs. This raises a clear question as you plan your trip: would you like to explore the landscape and a nature-and-culture route, or focus on the commune’s architectural and commemorative history?

Landscape and Outdoor Activities

The area of Leordina commune lies within the Natura 2000 site “Munții Maramureșului.” Its natural meadows and beech vegetation at elevations of 500 to 600 m provide a specific setting for exploring the landscape. If you would like to combine nature and culture when choosing a destination, you will find churches, monuments and customs alongside the natural scenery.

In Leordina, the Drumul Maramureșului is a route of more than 700 km through nature and culture. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Its overall length makes it a standalone route project; for your stay, it is worth deciding in advance how much of a focus you want it to be. This will help you match the scale of your plans to the time available for your trip.

The Bistra River also runs through the commune. It has traditional fishing areas associated with fishing by local residents. If you would like to fish, check the local conditions and access in advance. This means there are different considerations for your plans: the Drumul Maramureșului is explored on foot or by bicycle, while fishing on the Bistra requires checking the conditions beforehand.

Churches and Memorial Sites

The church “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril” was built of stone in Leordina commune between 1864 and 1871. Local craftsmen built it with the support of residents, under the direction of priest Paul Orosz. Its construction period, materials and community involvement offer a specific insight into the local architectural history.

The Orthodox church “Sfântul Proroc Ilie Tesviteanul,” also known as Leordina-Râu, was founded in 2002. Its design is in the form of a cross-shaped nave. It also features two slender flanking towers, a central tower and a spacious outdoor balcony. The two churches therefore highlight different aspects: the first, its construction period and stonework; the second, its cross-shaped design and towers.

The “În memoria camarazilor căzuți” monument is located in the military cemetery of Leordina commune. The cemetery is 1 km from the Orthodox church and contains twelve crosses marking the graves of German soldiers buried there in 1917. If you plan to visit the memorial sites, check access in advance.

Another monument in the commune is the “Monumentul Eroilor din Primul și al Doilea Război Mondial.” It is shaped like a wall, made of cubic andesite stones, and stands 443 cm high in total. Its form and materials give the subject of remembrance an architectural dimension as well.

Traditional Customs

“Ruptul sterpelor” is considered the oldest pastoral festival in the area and recalls ancient Dacian traditions. In Leordina commune, the custom is associated with a rural festival for villagers who keep sheep and mountain residents. It offers a different way into the area’s cultural history than churches and monuments, with pastoral traditions and community life at its heart.

Historically, the commune festival “Fii satului” was held annually on the third Sunday in August to preserve and pass on local traditions. Traditional winter customs included performances of the folk theatre “Viflaimul” by young people and singing Christmas carols. These different traditions bring together pastoral themes, festivals and winter theatre without reducing them all to the same occasion or a single season.
