The wooden church “Cuvioasa Paraschiva” gives Desești a tangible cultural and historical anchor. There is also a poetry series and protected areas with distinct geographical settings. If you are looking for a hotel in Desești, you can consider these themes as different focal points for your stay: church art and poetry on the one hand, nature and the rules of the protected areas on the other.

Wooden church and preserved building tradition

The wooden church “Cuvioasa Paraschiva” was built in 1770. Its interior paintings date from 1780 and are attributed to the fresco painter Radu Munteanu and his assistant Gheorghe. The construction and painting thus belong to two different periods. The church is part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble “Wooden Churches of Maramureş.”

The use of wood also has its own cultural and historical significance in Desești: the custom of using wood for houses and outbuildings has been preserved. This tradition of building houses and outbuildings complements the perspective on the church, without being equated with its World Heritage designation. For those interested in culture, both the church’s specific art and a broader building tradition in the village take centre stage.

Poetry in Desești

The “Serile de Poezie Nichita Stănescu” (Nichita Stănescu Poetry Evenings) have been held in Desești since 1979. Since 2000, the Grand Prize “Nichita Stănescu” has also been awarded at the event. The 43rd edition took place in Desești from 14 to 16 October 2022. The dates refer to different milestones: 1979 to the start of the series, 2000 to the start of the award, and 2022 to a specific edition. This places the poetry tradition alongside the material tradition of wood as a distinct cultural focal point.

Creasta Cocoșului and the Iezerul Mare bog

The Creasta Cocoșului nature reserve lies in the Gutâi Mountains, within the administrative territory of the Desești commune. Its geographical location is defined by the basin of the Cavnic River on one side and the valley of the Mara River on the other. Controlled tourism and educational activities are permitted in the special protection area, in accordance with its management rules. Anyone wishing to visit the area should follow these rules.

The Iezerul Mare bog is located in Hărnicești, also within the Desești commune, and covers five hectares. It lies on the pyroxene andesites of Igniș–Mara. The peat layer there is seven metres thick on average. The two measurements describe different things: five hectares is the area of the bog, while seven metres is the average thickness of the peat layer. Iezerul Mare was designated a protected natural area to preserve natural features typical of active bogs. This distinguishes the bog site, as described, from Creasta Cocoșului’s mountain setting in both its geological classification and its explicitly stated conservation purpose.

Hiking route to Iezerul Mare

A hiking route leads from Desești via Culmea Pietrei to Iezerul Mare. It follows an old path along the summit of Pietrei and through the bog. Iezerul Mare is therefore described not only as a protected natural area, but also as the destination of a specific route. As trail conditions can change, check the latest conditions before setting out.
