Vlădeni combines the waterscapes along the Miletin with architectural and local history. This gives you different options when planning your trip: the protected area with its ponds and reservoir, or historic buildings and archaeological remains. The commune itself also has a varied landscape; its river and terrain features should be considered at the commune level.

Wetlands and landscape along the Miletin

The Eleșteiele Jijiei și Miletinului protected area includes the fishponds of Vlădeni and the Hălceni Reservoir. Both were created along the Miletin. The reservoir lies on the river at the level of the village of Vlădeni. The bird protection area designated as ROSPA0042 covers 38 percent of Vlădeni commune. These details show the extent of the natural area within the commune and make it an important point of interest for anyone interested in birdlife and waterscapes.

Vlădeni commune has the hilly landscape of a plateau, with broad watersheds, extensive plateaus and slopes of varying steepness.

Vlădeni commune lies on the banks of the Jijia. The river is a right-bank tributary of the Prut. The Miletin and the Jijia therefore represent two different geographical features: the Miletin shapes the ponds and reservoir described here, while the Jijia defines the commune’s location.

Churches, architecture and local history

The church of Parohia Vlădeni was built between 1920 and 1927. It is designed in the Moldavian style and has a trefoil-shaped floor plan. The iconostasis also has its own date: it was made in Chișinău in 1924.

Another architectural monument is Vlădeni railway station, dating from the late 19th century. The railway line between Iași and Dorohoi, which passes through Vlădeni, opened in 1888.

The village’s early history can also be dated: the first documentary record appears to have been written on April 26, 1579.

Further historical connections and a regular date

About two kilometres west-northwest of Vlădeni lies the archaeological site of Movila Borțoasă. It includes settlements from the 4th and 5th centuries, as well as from the 6th to 7th centuries. In Borșa, about three kilometres from Vlădeni, stands the Church of “Sfinții Voievozi,” an architectural monument built in 1826.

A recurring event in the annual calendar is the patronal feast of the Biserica “Sfântul Dimitrie Izvorâtorul de Mir” in Vlădeni, held every year on October 26. If this date matters to your travel plans, take it into account when choosing your travel dates.

When looking for a hotel in Vlădeni, it can help to decide on your main focus first: are you particularly interested in the natural area along the Miletin, or would you rather plan your trip around architecture and historical sites?
