At the Muzeul Sitului Arheologic Cucuteni, visitors can look down into a sectioned tumulus and a princely tomb dating from the 4th to 3rd century BC. The building offers a view of the burial site as a whole; the museum also displays original archaeological objects from the Cucuteni culture. This brings the wider archaeological picture together with individual original objects, offering a tangible way in for anyone interested in early history.
Discover architecture and history
The Sfinții Trei Ierarhi Monastery was built by Vasile Lupu between 1637 and 1639. Its exterior is decorated with stone ornaments that resemble stone lace. The “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Palace in Ruginoasa offers a different architectural note: it now houses the Muzeul Memorial „Alexandru Ioan Cuza”, and features of the Neo-Gothic style have been preserved to this day. The monastery’s ornamented stone surface and the palace’s surviving Neo-Gothic features offer two distinct points of reference for exploring architectural history.
The Palatul Culturii houses four museums of national importance. The Muzeul de Istorie a Moldovei in the Palatul Culturii presents the development of the princely court of Iași. This connects a museum visit to a specific historical subject—the development of the princely court—rather than leaving it at a general overview of the museums.
Literary heritage in houses and museums
The Bojdeuca Ion Creangă in Țicău opened to the public on 15 April 1918, becoming Romania’s first literary memorial museum. Ion Creangă wrote all his stories and the well-known „Amintiri din Copilărie” there. Casa Pogor served as the headquarters of the „Junimea” Literary Society. Literary history can therefore be encountered not only through the titles of works, but also in specific houses and their historical roles.
The Muzeul „Vasile Pogor” hosts cultural events, exhibitions, fairs and activities for children. Since individual events may change, it’s best to check the latest schedule. The Muzeul Mihai Eminescu is also clearly laid out: on the ground floor are the Sala Destinului, with a zodiac mosaic, and the Sala de Arta; the Sala Prieteniei is upstairs. The three rooms offer a clear framework for distinguishing between the museum’s different sections.
Green spaces: park history and plant collections
Parcul Copou is Iași’s oldest city park and was established in 1833. At its center stands the Monument of the Organic Regulation, known as the „Obeliscul cu lei”. Also associated with the park is the lime tree known as Teiul lui Eminescu, estimated to be over 450 years old. History and nature sit side by side here: the park features both a named monument and a tree with a long, estimated history.
Parcul Expoziției covers approximately 5.4 hectares and is located on Copou Hill. Its facilities include two spacious children’s playgrounds and a dedicated skateboarding area. If these facilities are important to your plans, check their current status before visiting. Grădina Botanică Iași covers around 100 hectares and includes lakes and mineral water springs. Its traditional annual exhibitions bring together scientific plant collections and are of particular interest to visitors from Romania and abroad; check the specific exhibition dates before your visit. Grădina Palas also offers a sweeping view of the Palatul Culturii.
Cycling across seven hills
The „7 Coline pe bicicletă” activity route passes through Galata, Cetăţuia, Repedea, Bucium, Şorogari, Breazu and Copou and is 60 kilometers long in total. It runs mostly along unpaved roads. Numerous routes back to the city also make it possible to ride part of the route. This gives you two ways to plan: tackle the entire route or ride a section and use one of the return routes. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Winemaking in Cotnari
Winemaking in Cotnari has its own dedicated section. Crama Cotnari has 15 cellars extending over more than 2 kilometers, regarded as the winery’s main tourist attraction. The grape varieties grown in the vineyard include Grasă de Cotnari, Tămâioasă Românească, Frâncușă and Fetească Albă. The cellars and grape varieties offer a different focus from museums, historic buildings and green spaces.
