Muncelu de Sus brings together the hilly landscape of the commune, archaeological traces and two churches with distinct architectural styles and histories. This gives you a clear focus when deciding whether to visit: you can get to know the place through its terrain, archaeological objects and church architecture. If you would like to consider both landscape and cultural interests when choosing a destination, there are several specific points of interest. These range from the centrally located plateau area to the differing architectural styles of the two churches.

Hilly Landscape and Location

The landscape of Muncelu de Sus is part of the hilly commune of Mogoșești-Siret. The highest plateau area is in the centre of the settlement; at 320 metres above the Black Sea, Muncelu de Sus reaches the highest elevation in the commune. Together, these features describe two scales: the commune’s hilly terrain and the elevated central location within the settlement. The elevation figure answers the question of where Muncelu de Sus stands within the commune, while the plateau’s location describes the highest area within the settlement. For travellers who also take landscape into account when choosing a destination, this combination offers a specific point of reference.

Archaeological Traces

Another point of interest is the Muncelu de Sus–La Groapă archaeological site, which is listed in Romania’s National Archaeological Register. It lies approximately 500 metres west-southwest of Muncelu de Sus; Gropi is named as a hydrographic reference. Archaeological objects such as axes, daggers, scrapers and pottery are kept in the school museum in Muncelu de Sus. The site and the museum objects represent different aspects of the archaeological theme: one is the site identified by its location, the other the items preserved in the school museum.

Two Churches, Two Building Histories

The Biserica Sfinţii Arhangheli Mihail şi Gavriil was built in 1803 from wooden beams on a stone foundation. The Biserica Naşterea Maicii Domnului was built in 1924, also on a stone foundation, but with brick walls; its wooden predecessor served as the parish church until that same year. The year 1924 is therefore a year of transition: it marks both the end of the predecessor building’s role as a parish church and the construction of the brick church. There are 121 years between the construction dates of the two churches. Both buildings were built on stone foundations; wooden beams in the older building and brick walls in the newer one distinguish their construction methods. The Biserica Naşterea Maicii Domnului is dedicated to Naşterea Maicii Domnului and Sf. Cuv. Parascheva.
