Iaşi brings together several distinct cultural themes: literary landmarks, collections, religious buildings and parks. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding in advance what you want to focus on. Ion Creangă and Mihai Eminescu offer biographical and literary connections; Palatul Culturii and the monasteries tell stories of architectural history and religious tradition. Parcul Copou and the botanical exhibitions add another dimension.

Literature and collections

The Bojdeuca opened in Iași on 15 April 1918 as Romania’s first literary memorial museum. Ion Creangă lived there from July 1872 until his death on 31 December 1889. The site can therefore be understood both through the history of its museum and as a precisely dated chapter in his life.

At the Muzeul Mihai Eminescu, attention is drawn to three rooms: two on the ground floor and one upstairs. The book collection ranges from the first edition of Eminescu’s works, published in 1884, to more recent editions. It also includes monographic studies, critical analyses and translations of his poems. Alongside its biographical connection, the layout and collection thus offer a bibliographic perspective.

The Casa Dosoftei currently displays a liturgical book printed in 1508 by the Serbian hieromonk Macarie. This specific exhibit adds a historic printed work with a known year of publication and printer to the literary themes.

Architectural history and distinctive details

Two periods in time can be distinguished at Palatul Culturii. The present palace was built between 1906 and 1925, when the former Moldavian princely palace was reconstructed on the site of the former princely court of Iași, documented in 1434. Another detail is found in the clock tower: its carillon plays “Hora Unirii” on the hour.

The Sfinții Trei Ierarhi Monastery was built by Prince Vasile Lupu between 1637 and 1639. Its exterior is carved in stone and divided into 30 horizontal decorative bands. The pronaos contains burial niches for Vasile Lupu’s family and for the princes Dimitrie Cantemir and Alexandru Ioan Cuza. The details about the monastery therefore cover both its exterior design and the remembrance of princes and family within the pronaos.

Monasteries, museums and religious tradition

Golia Monastery also combines a biographical connection with a distinctive visitor attraction: a small ethnographic museum is now housed in an old house where Ion Creangă once lived. The bell tower has 120 steps, and its terrace offers panoramic views over Iași. The museum and tower provide different points of interest within the monastery: the ethnographic museum in the former residence, and the view from the terrace.

The Muzeul Mitropolitan was established in 2016 in the basement of Catedrala Mitropolitană. It features seven themed rooms: Sala Sinaxar, Sala Ofranda, Sala Ctitorilor, Sala Ekklesia, the labyrinth passage known as Calea Crucii, Sala Istoria Duhovnicească a Moldovei and Sala Baptisteriu. The names show the breadth of the themes and also give visitors a clear route through the museum.

The Feast of Saint Parascheva on 14 October is associated with Iași City Days; a major Orthodox pilgrimage takes place then. This date is a specific point of reference when factoring your interest in religious traditions into your travel plans.

Parks and botanical exhibitions

Parcul Copou is the oldest park in Iași and in Moldavia, and has five entrances. Its age places it within the history of the city and region, while the number of entrances offers practical guidance for visitors. The park complements the museum and religious themes with its own landscape-focused appeal.

The Grădina Botanică „Anastasie Fătu“ adds a botanical dimension. Its traditional annual exhibitions feature scientific collections of cultivated plants; themes and dates vary from year to year. They are of particular interest to tourists from Romania and abroad. Since the themes and dates change each year, it is worth checking the information for your travel year in advance.
