Uricani can be explored through a wide range of trails and themes: from hiking trails and marked themed routes to cultural tourism routes, waterfalls and karst landscapes. The mountain and themed trails vary in difficulty. When planning, consider the character of the specific routeâespecially when comparing a challenging mountain hike with an excursion to a natural attraction.
Hiking Trails and Culture in Uricani
Uricani is the starting point for the local cultural tourism route âČinutul Momârlanilorâ and the regional route âDrumul haiducului Neag.â The âRuta culturalÄ a bisericilor de lemn din Depresiunea PetroČani â Valea Jiuluiâ also begins here; it is integrated into the cross-border âRuta Cultural TuristicÄ a Bisericilor de lemn din România Či Moldova.â The three names refer to different types of routes: local, regional and cross-border. They should not be understood as a single, continuous route.
Active tourism includes trail running, ski touring, mountaineering, climbing and mountain biking. Ecotourism offerings include observing flora and fauna, gathering medicinal plants, and bird and wildlife watching. Along the Liliacului Trail, you can observe traditions of pastoralism, sheep farming and beekeeping in Dodoconi and Valea de Brazi. This means you can choose local traditions and nature observation as distinct areas of interest alongside sporting activities.
Waterfalls and Trails Through the Landscape
The themed trail to Cascada Sterminos starts at the access point on Strada Narciselor and passes through the Sterminos Valley. The forest road runs parallel to the Sterminos stream; confirm trail conditions locally. Access to Cascada Firizoni involves entering and crossing Cheile Firizoni. The 12 m-high waterfall is at the end of the gorge. The two natural attractions therefore differ in their described routes: the Sterminos route follows a valley and a forest road alongside the stream, while reaching Firizoni involves crossing a gorge. Check current trail conditions before your visit.
Access to Scocul Urzicarului is via the DN 66A from Uricani towards CâmpuČel, through Valea de Brazi and Câmpu lui Neag. The trail starts at Câmpul Mielului. The themed trail follows the dry valley of the Urzicarului stream, crosses the dry gorges it formed, and then leads to Scocul Urzicarului. Visitors interested in landforms will find a different focus here than at the waterfalls: the route features a dry valley, gorges and the stream that formed them.
Karst, Caves and a Challenging Mountain Hike
The ROSCI0217 Retezat Natura 2000 site is located within the administrative territory of Uricani. Karst features and formations developed in limestone cover approximately 18% of the area and extend for 41 km from the Jiului de Vest area to CerniČoara. The main caves along the upper Jiului de Vest in the Uricani area are undeveloped. They have considerable lengths and elevation differences, as well as varying levels of difficulty; they can only be visited with speleological equipment and a guide.
The CG trail, connecting Uricani with Vârful Peleaga, is considerably more challenging. This difficult hike takes about 11â14 hours and includes more than 3,000 m of elevation gain. It is intended for experienced, well-equipped hikers. It is dangerous in winter; whether it is passable depends on the amount and condition of the snow. The trailhead is in western Uricani near the DN 66A, about 300 m downstream from a fenced-in spring in the direction of PetroČani and near the bridge over Pârâul Sterminos. Its duration, elevation gain and winter conditions make this a different kind of outing to plan than the described themed trails to waterfalls and landscape features.
Cycling and Choosing Your Stay
The tourist cycling route connects Uricani, Câmpu lui Neag, Câmpul Mielului and CâmpuČel in that order. Confirm the route markings and current conditions locally. The roads to several natural attractions are also less busy, making them suitable for cycling. When looking for a hotel in Uricani, you can plan your stay around your intended excursions: cultural routes, cycling and natural attractions offer different options, while the CG trail requires separate planning because of its duration, ascent and winter conditions.
