Military Architecture Through the Ages

A clear thread of discovery emerges in Iron Market: from military architecture and Dacian fortresses to Geopark landscapes. Castelul Corvinilor is considered the most significant 15th-century military architecture monument in Eastern Europe. Its expansion from 1440 to 1446 created a new surrounding wall, flanked by seven predominantly round defensive towers. This construction phase makes the form of the defensive complex tangible: the wall provides the framework, while the towers set repeated circular forms against it. Access to the entire complex began on 1 January 2021; check current access arrangements before your visit.

An older chapter is represented by the six Dacian fortresses of the Orastie Mountains. They were built in the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD under Dacian rule. They were inscribed on the UNESCO list under criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv). The focus is both on the combination of military architecture techniques and on their significance as outstanding fortified sites of the European Late Iron Age. Extensive, well-preserved remains lie in a spectacular natural setting. Thus, different periods come together in the region’s cultural story: Late Iron Age fortifications and the history of the expansion of Castelul Corvinilor.

Archaeological Traces and Historic Monuments

At Sarmizegetusa Regia, attention turns to a Dacian defense system that extended over about 150 km² and was intended to protect the power center of the Dacian kingdom. Archaeological investigations identified defensive towers in the retaining walls of the terraces in the sacred area. These include a striking pentagonal tower on the outer wall of Terrace XI. Its form stands out in comparison with the predominantly round towers of Castelul Corvinilor, showing two concrete examples of military architecture from different periods. Magna Curia, also known as Bethlen Castle, is another part of the historic heritage: the monument is listed in Romania’s register of historic monuments as Category A (HD-II-m-A-03225).

Deva and Views over the Mureș Valley

Cetatea Deva combines a historic structure with a striking landscape setting. The fortress stands on a volcanic cone at an elevation of 378 meters and overlooks the Mureș Valley. Marked footpaths or a funicular provide access. Local buses serve stops near the entrance, including routes 2, 6 and 7. As access infrastructure, bus routes and stops may change, check current access options and connections before your trip.

Geology and Fossils in the UNESCO Geopark

Two trails in the UNESCO Global Geopark Țara Hațegului offer different points of focus. The “Dinosaur Valley” trail leads from the House of Dwarf Dinosaurs to the “La Scoaba” geotope, where the Geopark’s first dinosaur fossils were discovered. The “Volcano Road” begins in the center of Densuș village and leads to the volcanic hills and the House of Volcanoes. Well-preserved pillow lava outcrops can be seen along the way. There are also extremely rare fossils of dwarf reptiles, representing more than ten dinosaur species. Together, these details offer a glimpse of the Geopark’s geological formations and fossil history.

Cycling and Climbing Routes

Specific options are also available for active exploration: two of the twelve cycling routes established in Țara Hațegului pass through Retezat National Park. The park also has designated climbing routes on Pereții Bucurii and Colții Pelegii. The routes vary in difficulty and may only be undertaken with the appropriate equipment. Check equipment and access requirements before setting out on a climbing tour. The two types of activity also differ in their preparation: the cycling routes are noted for their connection to the national park, while difficulty levels and equipment are important considerations for the climbing routes.

The visitor attractions of Hunedoara County bring together protected mountain and natural areas, a UNESCO Geopark, medieval castle and palace heritage, and the ancient Dacian capitals of Sarmizegetusa Regia and Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa. The region’s themes thus range from archaeological fortifications to geological outcrops and designated activities.
