Those choosing Sălaşu De Sus for a trip can focus on different aspects of nature, outdoor activities and architectural history. A viewpoint offers a view across the Hațeg Depression; other named routes lead to a fortress or a cave. There are also protected daffodil meadows, fortified structures and regional products. The specific locations and destinations help you tailor your trip to the subjects that interest you most.

Trails, views and nature

The “Natura lângă noi” themed trail starts near the Retezat National Park visitor centre in Nucșoara and leads to a viewpoint. From there, much of the Hațeg Depression is visible. The “People and the Forest” themed trail has a different destination: it runs from the visitor centre in Nucșoara to Mălăiești Fortress. This difference is helpful when choosing: one trail focuses on panoramic views, while the other leads to a named historic site.

The route to Gura Cetății Cave also has its own sequence of waypoints. It begins at the Sălașu de Sus Tourist Information Centre, passes through Paroș and continues to Peștera; from there, it is about two kilometres further to the cave. The distance given refers to this final stretch. Four of the twelve cycling routes managed by the Asociația de Ecoturism Țara Hațegului-Retezat pass through the commune of Sălașu de Sus.

Another connection with the Retezat Massif is Cabana Gențiana on its northern side. It can be reached via the Ohaba de sub Piatră – Sălașu de Sus – Cârnic – Pietrele route. Together with trails whose starting point or destination is explicitly in Nucșoara, Sălașu de Sus or Peștera, this offers a range of different route connections. When choosing, it is worth paying attention to the stated start and end points of each route.

The daffodil meadows lie between Sălașu de Sus and Nucșoara. This protected botanical nature area covers approximately 20 hectares, where wild daffodils have spread spontaneously. The meadows belong to IUCN Category IV and the Țara Hațegului UNESCO Global Geopark. This landscape feature therefore comes with both a specific area measurement and a clearly defined protection status.

The Daffodil Festival takes place every year in the meadows near Nucșoara around the feast of Saints Constantine and Helena. It lasts two days and includes cultural and sporting events. If the festival is a key part of your visit, this annual period provides a specific point of reference for planning your dates.

Fortified structures and traditional technology

The fortified Cândreș manor house in Sălașu de Sus dates from the 15th to 17th centuries. The complex includes a princely or noble court and a court chapel with a bell tower; the chapel is in a ruined state. The rectangular enclosure measures approximately 95 × 55 metres. Its period, components and dimensions give the site a different character from Mălăiești Fortress.

Mălăiești Fortress was built by the Cândreș noble family of Sălaș around 1380. Its stone curtain wall encloses a keep; four polygonal towers were added later. The architecture can be read through several features: the curtain wall, the keep inside and the towers added later. The fortress was restored from 2012 onwards. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.

The village of Peștera is also home to a traditional technology complex with a watermill, a fulling mill and a lime kiln. These three features offer a different focus from the fortified structures: here, the emphasis is on technical installations. Visitors interested in architectural history can explore different themes without equating the mills and lime kiln with a fortress.

Regional products

Virșli de Sălaș is identified as a traditional product specific to the commune of Sălașu de Sus and is certified as a traditional product by the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture. Local products can be viewed and sampled at events and in residents’ homes. This offers a culinary perspective on the commune alongside its landscapes and buildings. If you would like to include regional products in your travel interests, events and residents’ homes are the options mentioned.

The different themes do not require a single approach to planning your trip: for a focus on landscapes, the viewpoint and daffodil meadows are key features; for architecture and history, the various structures and their components matter. The route descriptions, in turn, help distinguish destinations by their stated starting and ending points.
