Vărmaga combines a mountain setting with a village history dating back to 1492. Its landscape and culture reveal different aspects of the place: mountains, a depression and a watercourse situate the village, while the church, archaeological site and Călușeri groups add historical and cultural points of reference.

Mountains, Watercourse and Landscape

The village lies in the Metaliferi Mountains at the foot of the Auriferi Mountains, in a depression below the summit of Vârful Gurguiota. Vărmaga stretches for more than seven kilometres along a watercourse. This length also describes the extent of the village: the watercourse is a point of reference for its course, while the summit and depression place it within the mountains.

The watercourse through Vărmaga has a constant flow on all 365 days of the year, regardless of climatic conditions. East of the village, a karst area with grottoes and caves extends to the boundary of Geoagiu. In Ghețari, snow remains until July of the following year. The watercourse flows constantly throughout the year, while in Ghețari snow lies until July of the following year; this shows a contrast between steady flow and long-lasting snow cover.

Village History and Cultural Points of Reference

The village has been documented in written records since 1492. The present-day Orthodox church was built in 1904 to replace an older church. It is ship-shaped and has two entrances; in 2014 it was reconsecrated and received “Sf. Ioan Rusul” as its second patron saint. The dates mark different milestones: 1492 relates to the village’s history, 1904 to the construction of the present-day church, and 2014 to its reconsecration. Its shape and entrances add specific features of the place of worship to this chronology.

The Vărmaga–Lidişolm archaeological site lies north of the village on a rocky summit at the boundary with Nojag. The site and the village are distinct points of reference: the archaeological site lies north of Vărmaga on the rocky summit.

There are two Călușeri groups in total in the villages of Nojag and Vărmaga. The tradition thus includes both villages and broadens the cultural picture beyond the history of individual buildings.

Choosing Your Trip and Getting There

When choosing a destination, you can weigh the landscape and history as different interests. Details about the depression, watercourse and karst help you locate Vărmaga; the dates distinguish the village’s history, the church’s construction and its reconsecration. This can help you decide which aspect matters most for your stay when planning your trip.

In an extract from a Hunedoara County resolution dated February 2021, the Deva–Vărmaga route was listed in the regular public passenger transport programme. For your specific journey, please check current timetable information before planning to use the connection on your travel date.
