Comuna Malu Mare offers two distinct perspectives for planning a trip: nature along the Jiu and protected habitats on the one hand, and archaeological and architectural history on the other. Road and rail connections also help with getting there. If you’re looking for hotels, you can first consider whether landscapes, seasonal birdwatching or local history will shape your stay, then plan your journey.
Jiu Valley and Protected Nature
Comuna Malu Mare lies in the Jiu Valley, at the boundary between the Getic Piedmont and the Romanian Plain. To the northwest, it borders the Bălăciței unit, and to the northeast, the Oltețului unit. The boundary zone describes the transition between the two landscapes; its location in the Jiu Valley also places the commune within the river valley.
Riverbank habitats in the Malu Mare area are part of the ROSCI0045 Coridorul Jiului Natura 2000 site. The large copper butterfly (Lycaena dispar) has been recorded in the Malu Mare area within the Coridorul Jiului Natura 2000 site. Both riverbank habitats and a specifically named butterfly species are therefore among the commune’s natural features.
Birdwatching and Fishing
The Complexul lacustru Preajba - Făcăi is a protected area north of Preajba, close to the DN55 national road. Birds that can be observed in the area include great egrets, white storks, little egrets, coots, pochards, greylag geese and Savi’s warblers. Birdwatching is seasonal. If you’re planning your trip around it, choose your travel dates accordingly.
Preajba-Făcăi is associated with a 19-hectare fishing lake. Check the fishing rules and access conditions before you travel. Nature watching and fishing involve different planning considerations: for birds, the season matters; for fishing, check the rules and access in advance.
Archaeological and Architectural History
The commune of Malu Mare was first mentioned in a document in 1494. A Hallstatt-period settlement was discovered at „La jumătăți“, on the left terrace of the Jiu, 250 meters west of the town hall. The pottery found there is attributed to the Basarabi culture.
Today’s Han Preajba is the former Conacul Iancu Jianu; the building was constructed in the 18th century. For many years, it was one of the area’s most important places for recreation. Preajba is also home to the Biserica „Sf. Ștefan – Sf. Gheorghe“.
The documentary mention marks the beginning of the written history of the place; „La jumătăți“ offers an archaeological perspective, while the Conacul connects architectural history with its former role as a place of recreation. These different points of reference give local history several chronological and cultural perspectives.
Getting There by Road or Rail
The DN55 national road runs through Malu Mare and connects the commune with other places in the region. Malu Mare CFR railway station is on the Bucharest–Craiova–Timișoara railway line. If you’re travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel dates. These details help you decide whether to travel by road or rail; if you’re travelling by train, checking the timetable for your specific dates is a practical step.
