In Dolj, cultural and historical sites and nature-related attractions stand side by side as distinct highlights. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether museums and architecture or gardens, protected areas and birdlife should take priority. The sites and their history offer more than one way to explore the region.

Museums, gardens and history in Craiova

Muzeul Olteniei Craiova was founded on 1 April 1915. The museum operates four buildings with departments for history and archaeology, natural sciences and ethnography, as well as a restoration and conservation laboratory. This structure brings together different subjects under one museum name. The institution’s structure may change, so it is worth checking the latest visitor information before your visit.

Parcul Nicolae Romanescu covers approximately 90 hectares and is described as Romania’s largest urban green space. Its design also received a special historical distinction: the park’s design was awarded a gold medal at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition. Craiova Zoo opened in 1906 and is considered one of Romania’s oldest zoos. It is home to 39 species, with a total of 244 birds and animals; as the number may change, check the current figure before your visit.

Craiova Botanical Garden covers 17 hectares. It includes a museum with seed and fruit specimens, display panels, graphics, diplomas and catalog collections. Those interested in plants and how they are presented will find here not only the garden itself but also a glimpse into botanical collections.

Architecture and local history

Palatul Marincu in Calafat was built between 1905 and 1907 by Ștefan Marincu in memory of his daughter Marioara. The plans were drawn up by Paul Gottereau, and the construction work was supervised by Constantin Rogalski. Its architecture combines French Neoclassicism with Baroque and Rococo accents, as well as influences from early 20th-century Romanian architecture. This combination of styles makes the building a distinctive feature for a trip focused on cultural history.

Cula Cernăteștilor was converted into a museum in 1972, housing evidence of the local past. The first fortified building in the locality was built in 1600 by the merchant Dimitrie Cernat. Cula Izvoranu-Geblescu probably dates to the second half of the 18th century. Its listed opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00; it is closed on Mondays. Check the hours before your visit.

In Băilești, Casa Memorială Amza Pellea opened to the public on 7 April 2024. The exhibition commemorates the actor Amza Pellea and displays objects donated by his daughter, actress Oana Pellea. If you are planning a visit, check the latest access information beforehand.

The county’s tourism history is also linked to a specific date: in 2016, the Dolj County Council decided to establish the county’s first tourist route, titled Istorie și tradiție doljeană.

Protected areas and birdlife

The ROSCI0045 Coridorul Jiului Natura 2000 site extends along the lower course of the Jiu. It was designated in 2007 by an order of the Minister of the Environment. An educational thematic nature trail has been set up in Pădurea Zăval. As its condition should be checked before travelling, obtain up-to-date information before your visit.

Lacul Bistreț covers 1,936 hectares and serves as a refuge for birds migrating along the Danube. The area is considered a reference site for the protection of migratory birds. Lacul Bistreț was designated a special protection area for birds in 2007 and received Ramsar status in 2012. These details make the lake a clear highlight for travellers interested in habitats and bird migration.
