A trip to Piteşti can focus on very different things: church and city history, theatre and contemporary art, or parks and nature. Notable places to visit include a 17th-century church, a museum with a planetarium, a memorial offering guided tours, and several green spaces. You can tailor your stay to whichever of these aspects of the city interests you most.
Culture, theatre and city history
Biserica Domnească „Sfântul Gheorghe“ was built in 1656 by Prince Constantin Șerban and Doamna Bălașa. It is open daily from 07:00 to 20:00; check the current opening hours before your visit. Muzeul Județean Argeș is housed in the former prefecture building, constructed between 1889 and 1899. Its central site houses the history and natural science departments, as well as the planetarium, which uses a 4K UHD laser projection system.
The theatre scene also offers a variety of experiences. Located in central Piteşti, Teatrul „Alexandru Davila“ comprises the Drama, Revue, and Children and Youth departments. Studioul 125, also known as Sala „Liviu Ciulei“, opened in 1975 as a studio theatre for experimental performances. Another part of the city’s theatre history is the Reuniunea Studiourilor Teatrale: it was held four times between 1980 and 1983, revived in 2001 as the Festivalul Național al Teatrului de Studio, and later became an international festival.
Art and remembrance
Fundația Culturală Ilfoveanu brings together various art forms. It offers photography, decorative arts and visual arts courses for children, young people and adults, as well as workshops in crafts, media and communication. Its temporary exhibition galleries focus on contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installations and experimental projects. A permanent exhibition features works by Sorin Ilfoveanu. This gives you a choice of temporary exhibitions, a permanent display of works, and activities for different age groups.
Galeria de Artă „Rudolf Schweitzer – Cumpăna“ is housed in a building constructed in 1886 in an eclectic style with classical influences. Memorial Închisoarea Pitești explores the Pitești Phenomenon: between 1949 and 1951, a form of ongoing physical and psychological torture was inflicted on anti-communist students. The memorial is centrally located and has a car park suitable for coaches. One-hour guided tours are available in Romanian or English.
Muzeul Sportului Argeșean, which has been open to the public since 2008, is also located within Muzeul Județean Argeș. Piața Primăriei is another important venue for city events: most concerts and anniversary events organised by the city administration take place there.
Parks, nature and events
Lunca Argeșului Park covers 24 hectares on the lower terrace of the Argeș River and has four kilometres of cycle paths. The park is also the venue for a regular calendar event: the annual Simfonia Lalelelor Festival, held in April, has taken place there since 2022. If you are travelling for the festival, check the exact event dates in advance.
Trivale Park was laid out from 1900 in an ancient oak forest under the direction of landscape architect Edouard Redont. Pădurea Trivale Forest Reserve is characterised by rare thermophilous oaks and diverse vegetation. These two places offer different ways to explore Piteşti’s green spaces: the history of a landscaped park and the distinctive oaks of a forest reserve.
Parcul Ștrand has an operating schedule for its mini train, as well as a boat and pedal boat rental service. Operating times and prices may change; check the details before your visit. You can also choose between green spaces based on your interests: cycle paths, oaks and vegetation, or activities such as a mini train ride and boat hire.
Plan your stay around your interests
When choosing accommodation in Piteşti, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you rather plan visits to exhibitions, theatre and historic sites, or explore parks and nature? You can also make separate plans for time-specific activities, such as the April festival and operating hours at Parcul Ștrand.
