In the northern part of Argeș County, the Făgăraș Massif is part of the Southern Carpathians. Moldoveanu reaches 2,544 metres and is the highest peak in the Romanian Carpathians. At Lacul Călțun, other specific landmarks of the mountain landscape come together: the glacial lake lies at an altitude of 2,135 metres, northeast of Vârful Negoiu, in the Călțun cirque and at the foot of Vârful Călțun. It is halfway between Cabana Negoiu and Cabana Bâlea Lac. The elevation figures thus describe different scales: the location of a lake and the highest peak in the Romanian Carpathians.

Mountain scenery by road and on foot

The Transfăgărășan connects the historic provinces of Muntenia and Transylvania. The road reaches an altitude of 2,034 metres and includes 27 viaducts. Driving along it combines numerous hairpin bends with mountain scenery. The Valea lui Stan loop trail offers a different kind of experience: it is marked with a red dot, rated difficult and takes four to five hours. The duration and difficulty may vary depending on the weather and trail conditions. The trail starts at the Transfăgărășan, about three kilometres upstream from Cetatea Poienari and two kilometres downstream from Vidraru Reservoir. These approximate distances are intended as a guide. The details of the loop trail give a clearer idea of how long a hike takes; by contrast, the Transfăgărășan drive is defined by its hairpin bends and viaducts.

Gorge and cave

Cheile Dâmbovicioarei is about two kilometres long, and its vertical walls rise to more than 200 metres. Peștera Dâmbovicioara is close to the road that runs through the gorge. It is easily accessible to tourists. Its branching gallery is more than 250 metres long and rises gently. The gorge and cave offer different scales of scenery: outside, the high rock walls; inside, the long, branching course of the gallery. For anyone interested in the cave, its described shape and gentle incline provide practical guidance for exploring it.

Monasteries, collections and remembrance

The Mănăstirea Curtea de Argeș complex includes a monumental church building, the Agheasmatarul, the Palatul Episcopal and a ten-hectare French-style park. The monastery was founded under Neagoe Basarab and consecrated in 1517. The named buildings and park give the ensemble several elements beyond the church building itself. Muzeul Municipal Curtea de Argeș offers a different way to explore the city’s history. It opened in 1969 and has more than 14,000 museum objects, arranged in seven rooms according to different periods in the city’s history. Here, the focus is on collections and their chronological arrangement; at the monastery complex, the buildings and park provide the points of reference.

At Muzeul Golești, the history of the Golești family meets a collection of traditional homesteads. The museum was founded in 1939 to preserve and promote the family’s heritage and historical memory. Its open-air section features more than 30 traditional homesteads from Romania’s main wine-growing and fruit-growing regions. Conacul Golești was built in 1640 and served as the Golești family’s residence for centuries. Its exhibition recreates the way of life of the boyar family from the late 18th to the early 20th century. The homesteads draw attention to different regions of the country, while the exhibition at the manor house focuses on one family and its way of life over a longer historical period.

Casa Memorială George Topîrceanu in Nămăiești offers another historical perspective. Its permanent memorial exhibition includes parts of the poet’s personal library, letters, manuscripts and photographs. Two exhibition halls at Mausoleul Eroilor de la Mateiaș are devoted to Romania’s role in the First World War and the fighting in the region in the autumn of 1916; a diorama is also on display there. Literary remembrance and the military history of 1916 thus appear side by side as distinct themes.
