Churches, historic estates, literary heritage, and winemaking give Valea Mare-Podgoria a range of historical points of interest. The wine estate ensemble “Ansamblul conacului de vie brâncovenesc” dates from 1688–1714; the “Sf. Ioan Bogoslovul” church was built later, in 1765, and rebuilt in 1789. The area is also associated with Liviu Rebreanu and winemaking in the commune. The hilly Valea Mare–Podgoria area reaches an elevation of about 400 m.
Architectural History and Literary Traces
The dates associated with the “Sf. Ioan Bogoslovul” church mark two different building phases: it dates from 1765 and was rebuilt in 1789. Its history therefore cannot be reduced to a single construction date.
The Brâncovenesc-style wine estate ensemble comprises the manor house ruins, a gate, and the surrounding wall. These three elements define the ensemble: rather than a single manor house, the focus here is on the remains of the manor and its associated architectural features.
Buildings from the 20th century are also part of the local landscape. Vila Bulandra is a historic monument from the early 20th century. Conacul Mihail Ghelmegeanu dates from around 1930 and is also among the area’s historic architectural monuments. The two references offer different time frames; the date of the Conac remains approximate.
The church of the Valea Mare-Podgoria skete was founded by Jupan Nicola Ghimpescu and his wife Ancuța and dedicated to Vieroși Monastery. After secularization, the skete was assigned to the parish of the village on whose outskirts it stood. Its foundation and dedication thus go hand in hand with a later change in its ecclesiastical affiliation.
A literary connection leads to Liviu Rebreanu’s house: the writer penned the novel “Răscoala” there and died on September 1, 1944. This link connects a specific work with the area’s history and complements its architectural history with a personal and literary perspective.
Winemaking in Many Forms
Vila Turturica is located in Ștefănești, Valea Mare-Podgoria, and is considered a historic villa in the Mediterranean style. It is part of Domeniul Florescu and the old Crama Florescu, a winery founded about 100 years ago on the Leșcioarele wine-growing slope. The villa, estate, and winery thus offer a distinct point of reference within the history of winemaking.
In the associated commune, a walk through the vineyards and a wine tasting at Casa de vinuri Ștefănești (Crama Marcea) are part of the wine trail through the vineyards of Ștefănești. If you plan to include this stop, check its current availability in advance.
Cultivation itself is also part of the winemaking context: new vineyards with a total area of 25 ha were planted on the Marcea Plateau. This figure describes the extent of the planting; the wine trail, with its walk and tasting, offers a different, experience-based way to explore the subject.
