Leordeni in Argeș County combines historic buildings with a rural landscape. To get your bearings, it is worth noting the full place names: the Casa Memorială „Dinu Lipatti” and the Expoziția Memorială „Dinu Lipatti” are in Ciolcești; the wooden church is named Glâmbocata-Deal (Călugărița), and the church of Leordeni-Cretulescu is in the settlement of the same name. Leordeni is also home to the Lahovary-Gussi manor ensemble. These places offer different points of interest for a stay: church architecture, links to Lipatti, a historic estate and vegetation.

Churches with Different Building Histories

The wooden church of Glâmbocata-Deal (Călugărița) dates from 1746. Its dedication is „Nașterea Domnului”. It served as a place of worship for a nuns’ skete and is a nationally important architectural monument. The building thus combines a specific history of religious use with its significance as a monument.

The church of Leordeni-Cretulescu was built between 1858 and 1861, replacing an older church dating from 1745. Its trefoil floor plan is divided into the altar, naos, pronaos and narthex; two towers rise above the pronaos and naos. This makes it possible to explore both its building history and its specific spatial layout. In Leordeni-Golescu, the church was founded on 15 August 1835 by the great boyar Iordache Golescu.

The three churches differ in their building histories and historical points of reference: the wooden church also stands out for its former religious function, Leordeni-Cretulescu for replacing an older church, and Leordeni-Golescu for its precisely dated founding. The wooden church dates from 1746; in Leordeni-Cretulescu, the building constructed between 1858 and 1861 replaced a church dating from 1745, and the church of Leordeni-Golescu was founded on 15 August 1835.

The Villa and the Memory of Dinu Lipatti

The Casa Memorială „Dinu Lipatti” is in Ciolcești. This villa was built between 1938 and 1942 in the Neo-Romanian style by Constantin Lipatti, violinist and father of Dinu Lipatti. The builder, family connection, construction period and style give the building a distinct cultural and historical significance. Its construction dates are considerably later than those of the churches mentioned above.

The Expoziția Memorială „Dinu Lipatti” is also in Ciolcești. Its published opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Manor Ensemble and Landscape

The Lahovary-Gussi manor ensemble in Leordeni dates from the 17th to the 19th century; it includes a park dating from the 19th century. The ensemble’s date range is broader, while the park has its own specific date. This offers an additional time reference for travelers interested in historic estates.

The rural vegetation also gives a stay its own distinct character: Leordeni has forests of pedunculate oak, sessile oak and Turkey oak, as well as floodplain meadows with alders and willows. The different forest types and floodplain meadows add the local plant life to the area’s cultural attractions.

A Seasonal Aspect of Food Culture

Leordeni’s autumn food culture included grapes, țuică and wine, which were also offered for sale. This historical, seasonal connection broadens the picture beyond buildings and vegetation to include local food culture.
