Comuna Moșoaia can be understood through its elevation, a road connection and cultural-historical traces from several eras. Bronze Age and Geto-Dacian finds meet at Smeura; a necropolis and churches add to this picture. The area therefore offers more than a single historical point of interest.

Landscape and Orientation

The commune lies on the Cotmeana Plateau. Its elevation ranges from about 500 m in the north-northwest to 200 m in the southwest. This range provides a concrete spatial reference within the commune. Another point of reference is the DN 67B: it crosses Comuna Moșoaia from northeast to west and connects Pitești with Drăgășani. The Teleorman stream runs for 7.25 km through the commune. Elevation, the road axis and the stream describe different geographical aspects. Check road conditions before travelling.

Archaeological Traces near Smeura and Moșoaia

Bronze Age finds from the Tei culture were discovered at the Aşezarea de la Smeura - La Rogoaze settlement. The site is dated to 1700–1400 BC. The finds include pottery fragments, fragments of fired clay, a stone knife and a flint point. Remains of a Geto-Dacian settlement dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD were also discovered there, including pottery fragments and an iron knife. The two groups of finds represent distinctly different periods: the Bronze Age and the Geto-Dacian era.

The settlement’s location is specified by reference to two roads: it lies about 0.5 km south of the DJ 703E and about 1.5 km north of the DN 67B. Another archaeological site is the Necropola de la Moşoaia - Pădurea Moşoii necropolis, at the entrance to Moşoaia. It comprises five tumuli and is dated from the Late Hallstatt period to the Early La Tène period. The largest tumulus is about 25 m in diameter and 3 m high. The necropolis has been significantly disturbed by modern interventions. The settlement and the necropolis thus offer two distinct archaeological themes and periods.

Churches, Art and Remembrance

Biserica Cuvioasa Paraschiva church lies in the valley of the Teleorman River, halfway between the villages of Moşoaia and Lăzăreşti. Its monument number is AG-II-m-B-13746. In Ciocănăi, Biserica Sfântul Nicolae church has the monument number AG-II-m-A-13595. Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului church is also located in Smeura.

The church in Hințești offers a distinct art-historical facet. Its original oil paintings were executed by Gheorghe Stoenescu; an inscription identifies him as a pupil of the renowned Romanian painter Gh. Tătărăscu. Votive frescoes of the founders and their families have also been preserved in the church. The paintings and founder portraits thus complement the archaeological themes with insights into church art.

At the Moșoaia war memorial, the names of local heroes from the First and Second World Wars are inscribed on white marble plaques. Taken together, settlement finds, tumuli, church art and remembrance offer various cultural points of interest for understanding a stay here. The elevation and the waterway and road references mentioned above add a geographical context to these themes.
