Bughea de Sus lies at an altitude of 590 metres and is designated as a tourist and balneoclimatic spa resort under Government Decision 867/2006. The resort is also known as Băile Măgura. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: should you focus on the mineral springs and spa-resort atmosphere, or on the scenery and mountain trails?
Mineral springs and spa-resort atmosphere
The mineral springs of Bughea de Sus are associated with Miocene deposits in the region. A hydrothermal deposit is linked to four water springs in Bughea de Sus. The Măgura springs are athermal and hypotonic and are used for both external and internal applications. If you are planning a specific treatment, check in advance what is currently available.
Scenery at the Iezer Mountains
Bughea de Sus lies at the foot of the Iezer Mountains. The hills surrounding the commune, including Măgura, Coasta Înaltă and Gresia, are covered with fir, oak, birch, beech and poplar forests. The Bughea River carries clear, cold water. These landscape features offer different points of interest for a nature-focused stay: the mountain foothills, the wooded hills and the river.
Mountain trails and getting your bearings
Numerous mountain trails of varying difficulty lead from Bughea de Sus toward the Iezer–Păpușa Mountains. One route passes through Voina and Muntele Văcarea to Refugiul Iezer. Since the trails vary in difficulty, choose your hike based on the specific route, not just its direction toward the mountains. Check trail conditions, markings and access locally before setting out.
From Bughea de Sus, the route to Cabana Voina climbs the Târgului River valley via Măgura. The cabin is 25 kilometres to the north. This landmark provides another specific destination in addition to the trails toward Iezer–Păpușa; you can distinguish between the two directions using the place names given.
Church and war memorial
The “Schimbarea la față” Church was built around 1892 and is listed as a Category B historic monument under code AG-II-m-B-13501. It is a local historic landmark with an approximate construction date and a clearly stated monument status.
The monument to the heroes of the First and Second World Wars stands on DC15A, opposite the school. It consists of three mosaic-concrete sections on a three-tiered stepped plinth and is topped with a cross. Unlike the church, the monument’s exact location and structure are the main points of interest here. If you are interested in local history, both offer distinct points of interest during your stay.
Choose accommodation to suit your reason for travelling
If you are looking for a hotel in Bughea de Sus, it helps to first decide what brings you here: the springs and spa-resort atmosphere, mountain trails or local history. This lets you plan your accommodation around what you want to focus on during your stay.
