Church and Village History

For a cultural stay, Galeșu’s village history, church heritage, and regional natural history take center stage. The Orthodox parish church Biserica Sf. Împărați Constantin și Elena and the Muzeul Sătesc din Galeș offer different perspectives: one reveals the history of a religious site, while the other presents images and information about the school, church, music, and the area’s natural resources. This spreads the focus across several topics rather than reducing local history to a single building.

The Muzeul Sătesc din Galeș was founded on October 17, 1976, by the teaching staff of the village school. Visitors can discover historical images and information about the village church and school, as well as the Corul Țăranilor din Galeș, the area’s natural resources, and especially the extremely rare fish Asprete, found in the waters of the Vâlsan. This breadth of topics connects local history with natural history and musical tradition. The Asprete adds a distinctive natural history focus, while the images and information about the church and school highlight two central institutions of village life.

Biserica Sf. Împărați Constantin și Elena is the Orthodox parish church in Galeșu. It was first built of stone in 1877. After being struck by lightning for the third time on July 3, 1978, it was rebuilt and reconsecrated in the summer of 1980. Its original construction, rebuilding, and reconsecration can thus be understood as distinct stages in its history.

Architecture and Places of Remembrance

Casa lui Palalogelu was moved into the church courtyard in 2010 and converted into a small museum housing part of Galeș’s history. The house is considered the oldest building in the village of Galeș. Its relocation to the churchyard and later use as a museum connect architectural history with the presentation of local history.

The building of the Muzeul Etnografic al Satului Galeș follows the tradition of mountain houses: its foundation is made of river stones, its walls of beams, and its roof of shingles. The materials make the construction method easy to understand, from the stone foundation and wooden walls to the shingle roof. A stone monument featuring an eagle has stood in the courtyard of the Muzeul Satului Galeș since 1938. It is dedicated to Galeș residents who fell in the First World War. The building style and monument highlight different things: one illustrates a building tradition, while the other commemorates people from the village.

Traditions Throughout the Year

Masa Împăcării takes place every year on Easter Sunday in the courtyard of the village church in Galeș. The tradition includes Sarmale, Ciorbă, Tocană, Bureți, and Cozonac, as well as red wine or Țuică; the food is served in clay bowls with wooden spoons. The menus may vary. If you plan your trip around this celebration, check the practical arrangements in advance. This lets you factor the annual Easter date into your travel plans without assuming that the specific arrangements will always be the same.

The Datina Păstorilor folklore group from Galeș also presents songs, dances, and traditional peasant costumes every year at organized folklore events such as festivals and competitions. The group was formerly called Murmurul Vâlsanului. Specific performances may vary; if you would like to attend one, it is best to check the relevant event dates.

A Mountain Biking Route Through Galeșu

Alongside its cultural attractions, an official mountain biking route passes through Galeșu. The circular route connects Cosaci, Galeșu, Robaia, Prosia, Poduri, Domnești, Poienari, and Slămnești before returning to Cosaci. The sequence of places describes a route linking several settlements and makes cycling a distinct part of trip planning, alongside church and village history, museum exhibits, and traditions throughout the year.
