Goldbach (Roșia Montană) combines a mining landscape in the Apuseni Mountains with traces of Roman history, historic buildings and routes through the village. When planning a visit, it is worth keeping the different highlights in mind: an audio trail leads to narrated content at points of interest, while themed walks explore different chapters of the village’s history.
Mining landscape and historic use
The Roșia Montană mining landscape lies in the metal-rich Apuseni mountain range in western Romania. At the time of its inscription, it included the largest, most extensive and most technically diverse known underground Roman gold-mining complex. Wax-coated wooden tablets from Alburnus Maior provide detailed information about the legal, socioeconomic, demographic and linguistic aspects of Roman mining.
The lakes are also part of the mining history. Tăul Brazi is a small, artificially created lake that gold washers once used to supply stamp mills, ore-grinding mills and mining households. Țarina Lake is an artificial reservoir that originally powered stamp mills. At Piatra Corbului, a protected natural area and viewpoint, visitors can look out over the mining landscape, artificial lakes, surrounding peaks and the villages of Roșia Montană and Corna.
Buildings and local history
Strada Siciliană connects the historic centre with the Brazi district, as well as with Tăul Mare and Tăul Brazi. Italian craftsmen are associated with the street’s paving work. It is lined with white houses whose features point to mining and whose design is inspired by urban architecture. Here, the village streetscape and mining history stand side by side, without the street’s focus being limited to the industrial past alone.
The Palatul Administrativ, also known to locals as the Old Town Hall, was built in 1897 and is considered an example of traditional urban architecture in Roșia Montană. Biserica Romano-Catolică Sf. Ladislau was built in 1860 on the site of a stone church dating from 1783. The Greek Catholic Church of Roșia Montană is a historic monument with late Baroque influences.
The mining museum includes a Roman gallery, a lapidarium with Roman finds, ore-processing facilities from the Middle Ages and modern period, contemporary mining facilities, and an indoor exhibition space. The Roman Gallery illustrates how the Romans mined gold.
Routes and themed walks
The UNESCO site trail is designed as an audio trail: QR codes at the points of interest lead to narrated content. Its main route is a circular walk of about four hours, with a moderate difficulty level. There is also a route through the historic centre that takes in places of worship and historic buildings. The Traseul Naturii is a marked circular route that starts and ends in the historic centre.
For a shorter storytelling experience specifically aimed at children, there is the Traseul Vâlvei, based on local stories and legends. Check how the trail is currently presented before your visit. The Traseul Tăurilor is an easy, blue-marked circular route that also starts and ends in the historic centre and takes in five lakes; it is also recommended in winter. These options offer different starting points for choosing a route based on its theme, character and the time available.
Other themed walks have their own highlights. A two-hour walk through the historic centre includes, among other places, Strada Siciliană, the Văidoaia viewpoint and Nucleul Berg. A walk lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes with Tică Darie covers the history of the halted mining project and the revival of the village through crafts. Check the availability of these activities before your trip. The stated durations offer a concrete basis for planning: both themed walks are shorter than the main route, which takes about four hours.
A themed Tăurilor hike near Roșia Montană follows artificial lakes for about 8 km and is of moderate difficulty. It includes panini at the viewpoint and a traditional lunch at the bistro; here too, it is advisable to check availability before your trip. A fixed traditional menu from the Apuseni region is also offered for organised groups of 10 to 55 people. It includes bean soup with smoked meat, Virșli de Ighiu, oriental salad, pickled vegetables and apple pie. A vegetarian option is available. Also confirm the availability of this group offer before your trip.
