In Alba, traces of mining meet historic sites and paths through karst landscapes. When planning your trip, it’s worth first choosing its main focus: would you like to explore the region’s history, spend time outdoors, or combine the two? The places described offer different points of interest without forming a set itinerary.

Mining History and Cultural Heritage

Roșia Montană brings together the history of gold mining and an agro-pastoral cultural landscape. The various tunnels in the Roman gold-mining complex are seven kilometres long in total. The mining landscape lies within an agro-pastoral area whose features largely reflect the communities that supported mining from the 18th to the early 20th century. The Tăuri lakes are also part of this history: these artificial lakes were created for gold mining. Together, these places reveal different aspects of a landscape shaped by mining and the communities that supported it.

The Sala Unirii in Alba Iulia offers a different historical perspective. On 1 December 1918, 1,228 delegates of the Great National Assembly gathered there and voted for the union of Transylvania with Romania. Visitors can see the delegates’ credentials, flags, medals, the camera used on 1 December 1918, and other artefacts related to the union. Individual exhibits may change. At RĆ¢meț Monastery, the story reaches further back: it is one of the oldest monastic settlements in Transylvania. The third layer of frescoes inside the monastery was painted by Mihu of Crișul Alb in 1377.

Hiking Trails and Karst Landscapes

Alba offers different types of hiking trails. The Circuitul Tăurilor is an easy, marked hiking trail that starts in the central square of Roșia Montană; conditions may vary depending on the season. The ā€œNatura Ć®n culoriā€ themed trail, by contrast, is in the Scărița-Belioara Nature Reserve on the Șesul Craiului limestone plateau. It can be reached via Muntele-Băișoara, Poșaga or Ocoliș. The starting point and access details offer different reference points for planning your visit, but do not define a shared route.

In Cheile RĆ¢mețului, steep limestone walls form a gorge shaped by water and wind. This complex nature reserve has hiking trails through limestone formations and along waterways. Climbing, trekking and mountaineering are other activities available there. In Cheile Ampoiței, visitors can go hiking, climbing, take photographs and have picnics. If you’d rather explore nature through distinctive landforms, Ghețarul de la VĆ¢rtop Cave is a karst cave in the Apuseni Mountains. Its underground glacier exists year-round, and the cave galleries are more than 300 metres long. The cave can be reached in about 30 to 40 minutes on foot from Casa de Piatră in the commune of Arieșeni, Alba County. Seasonal conditions may affect access, so allow time for the visit and check conditions beforehand.

Regional Cuisine and Accommodation to Suit Your Trip

Regional products can also be part of your trip planning. The Micești local gastronomic point offers meat products, sausages and smoked goods, as well as preserves, syrups, zacuscă, pickled vegetables and cheese. Traditional Romanian dishes are prepared there using recipes passed down through generations. Since the offering should be checked before your trip, it’s a good idea to confirm availability before visiting. At Carmangeria FraÅ£ii Suciu in Săsciori, visitors can also try Virșli de Sasciori, a regional product made using an authentic recipe.

Then choose accommodation that suits the places you actually want to visit. This leaves room to adapt your daily plans to each outing and to seasonal conditions, rather than turning a list of different destinations into a fixed itinerary.
