Apuseni Nature Park has a visitor centre in Gârda De Sus. Planning a trip to the area involves a range of natural and cultural themes: the Poarta lui Ionele, Cotețul Dobreștilor and Ghețarul Scărișoara caves, Cheile Ordâncușei gorge, wooden churches and seasonal customs. When looking for a hotel in Gârda De Sus, it helps to consider what you want to shape your stay: cave features, local history or seasonal life in Poiana Călineasa. The sites have different conditions; at the Cotețul Dobreștilor spring, for example, the visible spot is clearly distinct from the flooded cave.

Caves and gorge: different experiences of nature

Cheile Ordâncușei is a 10-hectare protected area in Apuseni Nature Park. It was designated by Law No. 5 of 6 March 2000. A paved road runs through the gorge. Its protected status, area and road route describe different aspects of the same landscape.

Access to Poarta lui Ionele Cave begins in the centre of Gârda De Sus via the DJ 750. The cave is lit and equipped with walkways, metal stairs and railings. These facilities distinguish Poarta lui Ionele from the other caves, which have different notable features.

The spring at Cotețul Dobreștilor is easy to see. The cave entrance is 10 metres wide and 4 metres high. By contrast, the flooded cave through which the water flows can only be traversed by trained cavers using self-contained diving equipment. This distinction is essential when planning: the visible spring and traversing the water-filled cave are not the same experience.

Ghețarul Scărișoara contains a permanent body of ice with a volume of more than 100,000 cubic metres. In 1938, it became the first cave in Romania to be declared a natural monument. It includes the Sala Mare and Sala Biserică chambers. Together, the ice, its historic designation and the two named chambers give it a different profile from Poarta lui Ionele or Cotețul Dobreștilor.

Churches, history and religious dates

The wooden church Naşterea Sf. Ioan Botezătorul in Gârda De Sus dates from 1792 and was altered in 1863. Its building history provides a point of reference for the area's cultural history, without reducing the alterations to a single construction phase.

Biserică Ocoale serves as a place to rest and pray for people climbing through Cheile Ordâncușii to Ghețarul Scărișoara Cave. Visits on Sundays and religious holidays by residents of Ghețar, Ocoale, Dealul Frumos and Hănășești, as well as by other visitors, are expected. For the annual church feast, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Moți from Gârda De Sus and the surrounding settlements gather for a service on 6 August.

Another wooden church is Bisericuță Călineasa, located on a mountain peak and accessible via a paved road. It was consecrated in 2015 and is dedicated to Saint Elias. Services are held there only in summer, when the Moți are in the seasonal settlements of Poiana Călineasa. Here, the religious dates and the Moți’s seasonal presence are directly connected.

Poiana Călineasa and seasonal life

In Poiana Călineasa, the Moți move in with their animals and stay from May to September. The landscape includes coniferous forests, pastures, individual trees, seasonal settlements and free-grazing animals. The period from May to September gives the pastoral life described here a clear seasonal framework.

The residents of Poiana Călineasa work with wood and make traditional preparations from milk and forest fruits. The landscape is therefore linked to craft and culinary practices. In Gârda De Sus, visitors can also learn the local craft of Ciubărărit. Those interested in culture can thus find, alongside the churches, insights into local skills and traditions.

When choosing a hotel, you can take these differences into account: pastoral life and services in Poiana Călineasa are tied to specific seasons, while each cave has its own features and access conditions. Before your trip, check the latest access information for the caves and Biserică Ocoale.
