Several aspects of local history come together in Gârbova: the Cetatea Greavilor in the village center, Romanesque ruins in the cemetery, another castle complex in the forest south of the village, as well as an ethnographic exhibition and artifacts at the Muzeul Satului. Those planning a cultural trip will find links here to everything from medieval architecture to the everyday life of the local community. The annual folk costume parade in September is another highlight.

Fortress in the Village Center

The Cetatea Greavilor is located in the center of Gârbova. Access is possible only through a tunnel beneath a separate gate tower. The complex also illustrates the transition from a fortified military residence belonging to a Saxon nobleman to a fortress of the community. The Cetatea Greavilor thus combines a distinctive architectural feature with a development in its social function. Both its form of access and this transformation are important to understanding the fortress.

Hill Church and Old Castle

The Romanesque ruins of the Hill Church are in the cemetery in Gârbova and date from the 13th century. The ruins of Cetatea Urieşilor – the Old Castle – are designated a historic monument and date from the 13th and 14th centuries. They are located about 2 km south of the village, in the forest along the road to Jina. The dates overlap in the 13th century; however, the Hill Church’s Romanesque classification and the Old Castle’s monument status mark different historical emphases. Their locations also help distinguish the two ruin sites: the cemetery and the forest site south of the village.

Location and Access

Gârbova lies in southern Transylvania, on the southern edge of the Secaș Depression and at the northern foot of the Sebeș and Cibin Mountains. To reach the Cetatea din Pădure, travel from Comuna Gârbova through Valea Mare and climb over the southern mountain spur. Check trail conditions locally before planning this approach. The route description identifies both the valley and the climb as landmarks.

Exhibition and Finds

The Gârbova ethnographic exhibition is housed in two rooms and presents the everyday life of the local community. Alongside the fortresses and ruins, it brings people’s way of life into focus. The Muzeul Satului also houses 30 polished stone pieces found upstream at “Submăceși” in the mid-20th century. The exhibition and collection emphasize different things: one focuses on community life, the other on preserved pieces with a specific period and place of discovery.

The September Parade

The folk costume parade takes place annually on the first Sunday in September. It showcases Saxon and Romanian costumes and invites folklore groups to participate. As the program may change, check the date and event announcements before your trip. If you want to make the parade the focus of your stay, plan your travel for that Sunday and confirm the latest information. Unlike the historical sites tied to specific locations, the parade takes place on a set date.
