A route starts in Galda de Jos and follows the Valea Galzii towards Benic; other themes of the journey include historic buildings, a living winter custom, and striking limestone formations. This allows you to plan your stay around different interests, from architectural and commemorative history to landscapes and routes.

Castle history and historic memorial sites

Kemény-Albini Castle in Galda de Jos was built at the end of the 19th century over a medieval castle dating from the 17th century. The two dates refer to different phases of construction. During the uprisings of 1784–1785 led by Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan, the castle served as a place of detention for arrested peasants. Its architectural history is therefore connected to a specific period in the history of Transylvania.

Another historical trace concerns the Kemény estate, which was later taken over by the Albini family. The estate had a labour colony for political prisoners. The Monumentul Eroilor and the Troița commemorate those who fought in the First and Second World Wars. These memorials draw attention to two distinct wartime periods.

Church and traditional custom

The “Nașterea Maicii Domnului” Church is listed among the historic monuments in Romania’s National Heritage. It was built in 1715 on the site of an older church and has been documented in records since 1723. The construction date and the first documentary mention refer to two different historical milestones. Those interested in the development of religious architecture will find both here: an earlier building on the same site and a later written record.

Sânvăsaiul de la Galda de Jos is a preserved New Year custom and one of Transylvania’s living rural winter traditions. Its traditional description includes seven plates on the Ursitoare table. A comb, a mirror, a piece of coal, a wheat grain, tow, a carrot, and a pencil are hidden. The New Year connection provides a seasonal reference for planning your trip.

Limestone formations and routes

Piatra Bulzului, also known as Bulzul Gălzii, is a geological protected area within the administrative territory of the commune of Galda de Jos. It comprises a pointed-ridge limestone block at an elevation of 971 metres. The described access route follows DJ 107K to the village of Poiana Gălzii; from there, an approximately two-kilometre footpath follows the Bulzulului stream. Trail conditions may vary, so check them before setting out.

Piatra Craivii is also mentioned as a nearby landscape feature: the formation lies about 15 kilometres from Galda de Jos and reaches an elevation of 1,083 metres. The approximate distance includes the forest road. The final approach is on foot along this road, after the paved road ends at the outskirts of Craiva. Trail conditions can change here too; check the state of the access route before your visit.

The “Galda de Jos – Benic – Cetea – Cheile Cetii – Poiana Narciselor” route starts in Galda de Jos and follows the Valea Galzii towards the village of Benic. It can therefore be considered a landscape route in its own right, alongside the described approaches to the limestone formations.
