Geoagiu de Sus combines a long settlement along the Valea Râmețului with a striking stretch of valley and traces of local tradition. Beyond the village, the road towards Valea Mănăstirii passes through a narrow, spectacular valley carved into Cretaceous sandstones and conglomerates. The area is also home to working watermills and churches with distinctive architectural and historical connections. This gives you different points of focus when planning your trip: landscape and geology on the one hand, and traditional crafts and architecture on the other. This way, Geoagiu de Sus can be understood through specific landscape and cultural themes, rather than being reduced to a single attraction.

The Valley and Road Orientation

Geoagiu de Sus is a long settlement along the Valea Râmețului. At the edge of the village, the road continues towards Valea Mănăstirii; beyond the village, it runs through a narrow, spectacular stretch of valley. This was carved into Cretaceous sandstones and conglomerates. County road DJ 750C runs through Geoagiu de Sus, linking the Râmeț area with Teiuș. For orientation, it helps to distinguish the village’s location on the Valea Râmețului from the road’s direction towards Valea Mănăstirii: the first name locates the long settlement, while the second describes the road’s continuation beyond the village.

Watermills and Churches

Working watermills can still be found in Geoagiu de Sus and Stremț, where they are considered evidence of local tradition. Check their condition before visiting. The mills add a traditional craft dimension to the geological features of the valley.

The architecture of the Biserica „Intrarea în Biserică” in Geoagiu de Sus is influenced by the Byzantine tradition of Wallachia. The Biserica Episcopală dates from the 16th century. It was part of a former monastery founded by the Wallachian ruler Radu de la Afumați. The two churches offer different points of interest: one is notable for its architectural influences, while the other stands out for its historical period and former connection to a monastery. Both the architecture and the monastery’s history link the site to Wallachia.

Crafts and Cultural Tradition

The „Ziua Cânepii“ is also part of Geoagiu de Sus’s cultural heritage. As of August 2025, the festival had been held annually for ten years. The eighth edition’s workshop programme included embroidering hemp fabric, painting on water and stone, making wooden toys and candles, rope braiding, and clay modelling.

Mariana Mereu set up an ethnographic exhibition in her courtyard. In June 2025, the museum in Geoagiu de Sus, managed by the Mereu family, displayed exhibits. If you plan to visit, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
