Gralheira lies at an altitude of around 1,100 metres in the Serra do Montemuro. In addition to the Aldeia da Gralheira, Penedo da Saúde consists of three granite blocks. Gralheira is also known as the “Princess of the Serra.” Its altitude and rock formation provide two concrete points of reference for a trip that includes hiking trails, cycling routes and local culture.
Hiking and Cycling in the Serra do Montemuro
The PR7 Caminho do Colmo is a 15.5-kilometre circular hiking trail. It passes the Aldeia da Gralheira, which is listed as one of its points of interest. If you plan to take this route, check the seasonal trail conditions locally. This keeps the stated route length separate from the question of the trail’s current condition.
Another way to explore the area on a route is the section of the Grande Rota das Montanhas Mágicas described in Cinfães. It runs from Escamarão on the Douro to the typical village of Gralheira in the summit area of the Serra do Montemuro. This route description differs from the PR7, which is listed as a circular trail with a specific length.
The descriptions offer different points of reference for mountain biking. Route 41 is a loop that starts and ends at the Centro de BTT da Gralheira. The difficult mountain bike route 47 is also a loop and starts and ends at the Centro de BTT in Gralheira. Along the way, it reaches the Talefe at an altitude of 1,381 metres and passes the Portas de Montemuro. Route 48 runs via the Gralheira access point of the Montemuro mountain bike centre and explores the largest plateau area of the Serra do Montemuro.
You can first choose according to the type of route you want: the PR7 is a circular hiking trail with a stated length, while Route 47 is explicitly described as difficult. For Route 41, the loop and its start and end point are specified; Route 48 leads into the plateau area. Check local conditions before setting out, especially if you plan to use trails whose conditions may vary seasonally.
Museum, Crafts and Local History
The Centro Interpretativo da Gralheira is a museum offering activities related to maize cultivation, fumeiro (smoked meats), breadmaking, clothing and local crafts. Activities related to maize cultivation also include the Segada. Guided group tours are available too. The different topics provide insights into various aspects of local life and craftsmanship, rather than narrowing the visit to a single tradition.
The Serranitas atelier in Gralheira is also associated with local crafts, including items made from burel wool. Another historical landmark is the Chapel of Senhor da Boa Morte, founded in 1788. Together, the museum, crafts and the chapel’s history offer various cultural points of interest that can be included in your travel plans alongside the routes.
Events and When to Visit
Aldeia do Pai Natal takes place annually in Gralheira at Christmas. The programme includes themed houses such as Casa do Pai Natal, Casa dos Duendes, Casa do Café and Casa do Pão. The programme as described also includes theatre, music, traditional dances, children’s shows, concerts and a Christmas parade. Street entertainment, food, crafts, snow tubing, bicycles and inflatable attractions are also listed. Specific programme items may vary from one edition to another, so check the dates and programme for the relevant year before travelling.
The Feira “Fumeiro na Serra” is also held in Gralheira and includes a tasting of smoked meats and local products. A municipal announcement dated 13 March 2026 gave 21 and 22 March as the dates for a described edition; a tasting was planned for that edition. If you would like to include the fair in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant edition.
Two different cultural points of interest can therefore help you decide when to visit: Aldeia do Pai Natal, which takes place annually at Christmas, and an edition of the fair for which March dates were announced. For the routes, the available distinctions include length, whether they are loops and any explicitly stated difficulty. These specific details can help you plan your trip around the season and the activities you prefer.
