Vértessomló brings together themes of everyday culture, religious heritage and medieval history. The village museum, Baroque church, búcsú tradition and Vitányvár offer different ways to explore the local heritage.
Everyday Culture at the Tájház
Opened in 2012, the Tájház (village museum) is housed in a building around 150 years old. It displays period furnishings, photographs, children's toys and local traditional costumes. The furnishings represent domestic life, the toys represent childhood, and the local costumes represent clothing; photographs complement the collection with a visual perspective on everyday life.
Guided tours are available in Hungarian and German; tours in the local dialect can be arranged by appointment. Visitors particularly interested in the local form of speech should take this arrangement into account when planning their visit.
Church and Pilgrimage Tradition
A Baroque Roman Catholic church stands on the southern edge of the village; its dome is decorated with 18th-century Baroque frescoes. Another aspect of the religious heritage is the búcsú, held on 2 July. It is connected with the history of the forest chapel and its development into a pilgrimage site.
Vitányvár and the Hiking Trails
Vitányvár lies east of Vértessomló, within the municipality; its Gothic remains are crumbling ruins. The fortress was probably built around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and was first mentioned as a royal castle in 1324.
The Közép-dunántúli Piros hiking trail passes through Vértessomló; a trail marked with a K leads north from there, past Szarvas-kút, towards Vitányvár.
Scenic Highlights in the Wider Komorn-Gran Destination
In the wider Komorn-Gran destination, the Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet is a scenic highlight. The protected area is of national significance and has been individually designated; it is in Komárom-Esztergom and covers 8,676 hectares. Triassic limestone predominates in the Gerecse; Jurassic limestone is also found here and is particularly rich in fossils. In the wider Komorn-Gran destination, the Majki Kamalduli Remeteség offers a religious perspective: this Baroque monument complex includes seventeen hermit houses, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition there covers the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese Order. The Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont houses an interactive permanent archaeological exhibition featuring finds from excavations at Brigetio. In the wider Komorn-Gran destination, outside Vértessomló, a guided visit at the Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok begins with an exhibition on the history of the stud farm and continues in the Ménesudvar. The “Fogat bemutató, ménfelvezetés” programme presents four-, five- and two-horse teams; visitors can try these historic forms of transport themselves, but an appointment is required in advance. The stud farm also offers carriage rides to the nearby arboretum in two carriages drawn by Shagya Arabian mares; an appointment is required in advance. In the Duna-Gerecse Tourism Area of the wider Komorn-Gran destination—not specifically in Vértessomló—19 virtual walks are available to download in Hungarian, German, English and Slovak; they work offline. Check the application's current availability in advance.
