Tarján brings together church architecture, the history of everyday village life and routes through the town. Two churches can be understood through their construction phases, the Tájház presents several rooms of a historic farmhouse, and a themed trail explores the history, customs and present-day life of the local German community. For active visitors, a cycle route complements the local history with a connection between Tarján and Bicske.

Churches, Tájház and places of remembrance

Tarján’s Baroque Roman Catholic church was built between 1779 and 1783 to plans by Jakab Fellner. The Reformed church was built in 1785, and its tower followed in 1825. These dates reveal different construction phases: the Roman Catholic church took several years to build, while the Reformed church’s tower was added considerably later.

Tarján’s Tájház houses a permanent exhibition in a farmhouse built in 1912. It includes a room furnished in period style, a kitchen, a blacksmith’s workshop and a pantry. The different rooms offer several perspectives on domestic life and work. In this way, the house complements the churches with a glimpse into everyday village life.

A cross-shaped group of 96 gravestones commemorates the ancestors who had settled in Tarján since 1737. It also points to local religious and ethnic characteristics, as well as the stone-carving history of the period. Several rows of wine cellars, including Kis-szállás, Őrhegy and Sövénykert, can be found in the town and its surroundings. Alongside the churches and farmhouse, they represent another built expression of local history.

Themed walking trail and cycle route between Tarján and Bicske

The seven-stop themed trail runs along one of Tarján’s main streets. It presents the history, everyday life, customs, cultural and religious life, mother tongue and present-day life of the local German community. The trail begins at the first information board by the church. The map is intended as a guide for a walking loop that takes in many of the village’s sights. The themed trail thus connects several aspects of local life rather than focusing on a single period or building.

The cycle route connects Tarján and Bicske and passes through the area of Tarjáni Horgásztó, which is popular with runners and cyclists. The two routes have different focuses: the themed trail explores Tarján’s history and present-day life on foot, while the cycle route connects two towns and passes through the area around Horgásztó.

Regional context: Komorn-Gran

The wider destination of Komorn-Gran offers further, distinct cultural and landscape themes. Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet is a nationally significant, individually designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom, covering 8,676 hectares. Triassic limestone predominates in the Gerecse; Jurassic limestone is also found here and is particularly rich in fossils. This natural-history perspective complements Tarján’s architectural and local history with a regional landscape theme.

Majki Kamalduli Remeteség is also part of the wider destination of Komorn-Gran. The Baroque monument complex comprises seventeen hermit houses, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition explores the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese order. The complex is open Tuesday to Sunday: from 1 April to 31 October, 10:00–18:00, and from 1 November to 31 March, 09:00–17:00. Check the opening hours again before your visit.
