Gyermely combines a rich sacred history with a landscape of forests and hills. This gives you two distinct themes to choose from for your trip: churches, chapels and places of remembrance, or walks and activities in the surrounding forest.

Churches, Chapels and Remembrance

The chapel at Gyarmatpuszta is designed in the Neo-Gothic style and features a Rococo altar and carved pews from Venice. Sándor Móric, the “Devil Rider,” was buried in its crypt; at his request, his horse Tatár was buried behind the building. The chapel thus brings together Neo-Gothic design and a Rococo altar.

The Reformed Church of Gyermely is a protected historic building. It was built in 1785–1786 with donations from the congregation, the church and Count József Esterházy. Its tower was built in 1816 at the expense of Count Vince Sándor. The Roman Catholic Church of Gyermely was built in 1751 by Count József Esterházy, incorporating a 15th-century Gothic church, whose sanctuary has been preserved. The churches therefore offer different historical highlights: the Reformed church with its later-built tower, and the Catholic church with the preserved sanctuary of the older church.

At Paphegy in Gyermely, the Stations of the Cross, created in 1911, line one of the country paths leading up the hill. The Gyermelyi Szent István Király Chapel was renovated in 1975 by the Országos Műemléki Felügyelőség.

Valley, Avenue and Forest

The centre of Gyermely lies in a widening valley along a stream that meanders between hills. The road to Gyarmatpuszta is lined on both sides with a horse chestnut avenue.

The forest surrounding Gyermely offers opportunities for outings and relaxing walks. Runners and joggers also discover and use the winding forest paths. This means there are options for different interests in nature: a leisurely walk or exercise on the forest trails.

Getting Here and Village Life

The access roads reach Gyermely from three directions. Gyermelyi Lángos, with its mobile food stall, is part of village life and local events. It regularly appears at events in the village and surrounding area. If you plan to visit the stall at a particular event, check the event date and location.
