Atkár combines a geological feature with a traditional village streetscape and the history of Tass-puszta. The settlement lies on the southern slopes of the Mátra, although the terrain is mostly flat. Those looking for an apartment in Atkár can plan their stay around a range of themes: landforms, protected nature and local architectural and settlement history.

Landscape and Geological Nature Trail

A distinctive starting point for exploring the area is the Atkár Geological Nature Trail. It follows built steps and a footpath to a rare Pleistocene soil formation. Its soil profile was formed by frost action in periglacial soil and is described as an exceptional formation in Europe. This gives the landscape a distinct geological character: not only its position on the southern slopes of the Mátra, but also the formation of its soil is part of the settlement’s character. If you plan to visit the trail, check the condition of the path beforehand.

Wetland and Nature

The natural features at Margit-kút are different: this permanent wetland with open water provides protected species with food and habitat. While the nature trail focuses on soil formation, this is a habitat where open water is present year-round. The European bee-eater is also associated with Atkár. Ten to twenty breeding pairs were recorded at its nesting site in 1999—a historical figure from that year.

Village Streetscape and Architectural History

The central built-up area has a traditional village streetscape. Local architectural landmarks include the Roman Catholic Church of the Guardian Angels, dated to 1783. Dőry Castle is considered the only castle in Atkár to have been restored to its original state. Together, the streetscape, church and castle offer different points of reference for the history of the settlement area, without implying that visitors can go inside.

Dőry Castle near Tass-puszta was built in the early 19th century and later became the estate of a Baron Dőry. The history of the area goes back further: Tass-puszta was an independent medieval village within the boundaries of Atkár. By the early 20th century, it had become an important estate centre. Several historical layers meet here, from the former village to the later estate economy.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

The M3 motorway runs immediately beside Atkár, and a connecting road leads from the settlement to the motorway. When choosing accommodation, you can weigh this location against the specific places you plan to visit. If you are choosing an apartment, first consider whether you are drawn to Atkár mainly for its geological and historical sites, or whether you want to include it in a wider trip through Heves.

A Wider Regional View of Heves

Looking beyond Atkár to the wider destination of Heves brings larger-scale landscapes into view. The Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area lies in the southern part of Heves County and covers 16,114 hectares. It was designated in 1993 and reached its current extent following expansions in 2005 and 2008. Also within the wider destination, the 6.5-kilometre Ilona Valley Nature Trail runs along the Ilona Stream. It passes geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of former ore mining. These examples show two regional perspectives: a large protected area and a themed nature trail.
