Abasár combines hiking trails with a history of winegrowing, chapels and a geological formation. Some trails start in the village, while others pass through it; at Kapásház, winegrowing is presented alongside everyday working life and memories of the monastery. This lets you plan your trip around the themes that interest you most.

Hiking trails: start, route and length

Several hiking trails of national significance start in Abasár: Páternoszter, Via Dolorosa and Aba Sámuel Emléktúra. Nationally significant hiking trails marked in yellow and green also pass through the village. Abasár is also part of three tours in the Mátra Teljesítménytúrázója series, which comprises 17 tours; these start and finish in the village.

The routes vary considerably in length and theme. The longest organized route starting in Abasár is 56 kilometers long. Shorter routes focus on commemorating King Aba Sámuel and conveying his story. The Abasári bortúra is 6.3 kilometers long, providing another, considerably shorter distance option among the local tours.

Kapásház, the church and chapels

At Kapásház, artifacts preserve the history of winegrowing in Abasár. The house also showcases the way of life of seasonal workers and hoe workers who were active around the turn of the century, and displays mementos of the monastery. Winegrowing, everyday life and ties to the monastery come together here. Visits can be arranged in advance.

At the entrance to Abasár stands the small stone Szent János-kápolna. The current Roman Catholic church was built in the 17th century. Every year on the first Sunday in May, local parishioners walk from the church to the chapel, where an outdoor Mass is held. Szent Anna Kápolna lies north of Abasár. The tradition of the official Saint Anne pilgrimage to the chapel dates back to 1797. The Szőlő és Rügyfakadás Ünnepe festival is held on the last Saturday in April at Szent János-kápolna; check the latest dates before your trip.

Geology and other activities

In Serpenyő-völgy, Kőtenger is a natural formation made up of varied rock blocks left behind by earlier volcanic activity. This adds a different perspective on the surrounding area to its cultural themes: Kapásház is about winegrowing, working life and mementos, while Kőtenger is about traces of volcanic activity.

Near Abasár, on the edge of the village, lies Tekeres Vadaskert. Visitors can observe the wildlife of the Mátra, take part in wildlife feeding and experience the Mátra Safari. There is also a garden museum on the grounds. The hunting types listed include high-seat, stalking, wild boar drive and Rigli hunts. Check current visiting arrangements and the availability of the activities relevant to you directly with Tekeres Vadaskert in advance.
