Tyros combines coastal spots with a settlement history dating back to prehistoric times. The traditional settlement lies on the slopes of Mount Parnon; by the sea, beaches, a harbor and traces of history await. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on different things: a route with a swimming destination, time on the coast, or exploring the history and language of the place.

Slopes, beaches and notable places

The traditional settlement of Tyros lies on the slopes of Mount Parnon. Cape Trikeri is located on the northeastern side of Tyros, next to Tigani Beach; its name refers to the cape’s three peaks. South of Tyros Beach rises Kastro Hill. These named places offer different geographic reference points for planning your trip: Trikeri and Tigani are in the northeast, while Kastro is south of Tyros Beach.

Hiking and swimming spots

At Cape Trikeri, hikers can follow a route to Avlaki Beach and swim there. An old lime kiln stands along the same route. If you plan this outing, check the current trail conditions beforehand. Lygeria Beach offers a different focus: it lies next to Tyros Beach, where visitors can explore the underwater world and relax. The difference between the two coastal options is clear: Avlaki is reached via a hiking route, while Lygeria is a place to spend time on the beach, explore underwater and relax.

Historical traces in the village

Parts of a fortification remain on Kastro Hill, including four square towers and a semicircular tower. Three windmills stand above the harbor and have been designated monuments by the Greek Ministry of Culture. A fourth windmill is located in Upper Tyros, on Mylos Hill; its stone exterior is still preserved. The Fishermen’s Monument can also be seen on a walk along the coast of Tyros. The mining chute is another reminder of the work involved in extracting barite: it was used to load the material onto ships, and its stone base is still visible.

Language and seasonal events

Tyros is one of the villages of Tsakonia. Local residents still speak Tsakonian, a dialect that developed from Doric. This linguistic tradition adds another cultural dimension to the village’s visible architecture.

The small theater hosts numerous events in summer. If you plan to attend a performance, check the dates for your travel period in advance. Tourist boats operate from the harbor of Tyros. If these are important to your plans, check their current availability beforehand.
